Default So i had this idea

somebody hit my car a while back, dented the fender

so im getting a new set of fenders, and im left with the olds ones

so i was thinking of cutting out a hole in the one, and extending out the ram air intake outside the fender. Going with a mushroom filter sitting flat against the fender, then getting a small scoop to cover it

i figured that the dented one is shot anyway, i could play around with it

so just looking for comments on this

im not sure if it would even be worth it, but this would be a true outside CAI

think it would be too much rice? im thinking yes and no, so just looking to get some feedback

dont just bash it, support you reason, like i said i have a shot fender to screw around with anyway so.....

Ready.................GO!

I'm kind of a noob at this cold air intake stuff....

so by saying "and extending out the ram air intake outside the fender" u mean there will be a visible tube going outside of the car?

please dont do it, it would look ricey, imho, would be functional, yes, but it seems as if it would look utterly retarded, not trying to knock you, just saying this would not look good

well the ram air intake stops right about where the fogs would be

so i would pipe it out to the fender. Only the mushroom filter ( ] looks like that

would sit outside the fender

then would be covered with a small scoop

so really you wouldn't see anything but the scoop itself

Couldn't hurt to do it, but would the gains really justify the work that would go into it. If you are like me and don't care go for it! At the very least it would be something 99% of the xB owners wouldn't have. Although it might be a little rice. lol

yea i mean i doubt there would be any gain, and yea im a little worried about the rice factor

but it could be something to mess with

just looking for some feedback on the whole idea

i wish it wasnt a pain in the butt to swap the fenders on and off

*idea* instead of having a portruding scoop, extend the sri down and as close to the inner fender as possible and make an NSX style scoop/slit in the fender, i think that would be much cleaner and (in my head) seems to work witht eh boxy body lines

you can always take that fender to a body shop and have them fit it for you

its your car you can do what ever you want to it

I like the fender slit idea. It's almost like riding around without the foglight cover on, but not as rice looking. Plus you could probably fab a cover or sliding door. hmmmm, the possibilities!

our motors don't take ram air mods well.

they will tend to make your motor stall if you take your foot off the gas while at speed...

hmmmm good point, depends on how you do it. I had assumed you were going to just make a vent to make for mor airflow to the filter. I didn't know that you were going to go with a "ram air" style vent setup.

nope, body shop cant fix it, it has a crease in it, they wanted 700 bucks

so im just getting an after market set

but yea the cover would be just so you dont see a air filter hanging out

i just said ram air intake becasue that intake goes straight out rather then the CAI which goes down

oh, you mean "short ram" not Ram air. Ram air indicates there is a hose connected to the filter which is then connected straight to the throttle body. (not trying to be an butt, just trying to clarify ) Ok, if that is the case then go for it! Ram air setups are prone to Hydrolock cause the air that is pulled in is like having a straight pipe to the throttle body. A short ram is just a shortened version of the CAI. ok, now that I read this over I hope I made some kinda sense to someone. Either way, just don't let water near the filter.

any which way you want to think of it...when you get up to speed, the cover will force air into the filter (or the area where the filter is causing it to go in the filter) this causes problems...

if you can make it so the air comes in and has a place to get out...then it is just fresh air moving...
if the air coming in has too much of a restriction getting out of the area...it creates a pressure area(ram system).

the way i read it...the filter will be onj the outside of the fender..(seen from outside the car) and then a cover will be put on top of the filter to direct air/cover it up...

hence can be thought of as a ram air setup...
unless the cover were turned so the opening was on the back side...this would cause a vacuum and be bad for the motor too...the faster you went...the less air would get to the motor...

I was talking about the slit in the fender, the equivalent of popping off the fog light cover on the bumper. lol I suppose my strength doesn't lie in reading. lol
