I say go for it, Matt. It's okay to do that every once in a while. That would be a fantastic christmas for him.

Thanks guys. I do appreciate the input. Like I said, I know it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on one person for Christmas. He does know how to work hard and save up for things. We've been teaching him that all his life. He hasn't really even asked about the TV. That's pretty-much all my doing. I just know he'll LOVE it compared to his current set. I think I'm gonna do it. Hense forth I shall be known as....SUPER DAD!

just make sure you explain that this is special for him because he "keeps up his grades, doesnt get into trouble... etc". and fyi, he wont grasp the price himself, and it is true that the 360 needs and hdtv, BUT it will need
+ at LEAST 2 controlers
+ a $60 subscription to xbox live. no, you cant not have it. it will need connection to a cable modem, and it may have to be wireless. he cannot hook up to the internet with it though.
+a headset for XBL (xbox live)
+ halo 3 and maybe something like mass effect or oblivion?

keep in mind that there are a number of expenses... that you might not be completely aware of. go for it though! he only lives once, and he only has 4 more years with you... XD

im 17 and im getting an HID kit... be my dad? jk jk...

Yeah, I've been looking at that too. The "bundle" I'm getting him for $350 has the console, a wireless controler, a headset, and two games (not sure if he'll like the two it comes with). I'm also getting him Halo 3 and Maden '08. Then I'm going to pick up one more controler, an HDMI cable and I'll connect him to our DSL modem via a network cable. Am I forgetting anything he'll need?

You're doing the right thing. If you feel you're spoiling him, just include a list of all the things he's done right in the last year or two with his card. That'll show him you notice, and he'll know he got the best christmas ever because he earned it.

If he is going to play online, you will need a subscription to the XBox Live service. I think Halo 3 gives you 2 days of online play, and Madden may give you a couple as well, but you can get a 12 month subscription card at Wal-Mart for like $40 thereabouts. It includes a 13th month too.

P.S. Normally I'm all about the school of hard knocks, but there is a big exception here because of the way you describe your kid. He sounds like a parents dream. Congrats and good work.

I'd say do it. Nothing wrong with showing your kid how much you love him one year. Just be prepared to never see your son during the hours you both are home...he will be bashing at the gaming system in his room ALL DAY

That's a great idea. I'm gonna do that.

If I read it correctly, I think the 360 comes with a 30 day trial period too. That'll be enough for me to see if we want to subscribe for the year.

Thanks. I don't want to give the wrong impression here. It's not like he walks around with a glowing Halo over his head or anything. He can get into is share of trouble once in a while. But yeah, for the most part he's a great kid and we've been very proud of him.

Oh, and even with the cool new system, he's not going to be allowed to live on the thing. We set realistic limits for how much time he can spend gaming and such. He stays pretty busy with sports at school and by the time he eats and does his homework, there isn't much time left!

I'm sure this will be an X-mas he never forgets. Just make sure that next X-mas he doesn't expect the same amount of glory!! Then again if he earns it like he did this year then why not??

My parents could always afford to buy me these cool things, i guess i was a bad boy...

I can just see that conversation now: Honey, there is a 21 yr old girl on Scion Life who wants me to adopt her. Here is her picture. *My wife and son look at your avatar. My son starts high-fiving me and doing a happy dance around the room, while my wife proceeds to smack me on the head.

I have other pictures too I promise! I can edit one to make me look frumpy and malnourished at the same time.
