There are essentially 3 types of tech support:

- The type that knows what they're doing, is polite, and will do everything in their power to help you. If they don't know the answer, they will work dilligently to find it for you.

- The type that knows everything they're doing, but one too many wedgies in 9th grade gave them hate unparalleled in this universe. They are now in a position of power, and love it. The longer they can draw your problem out, the longer they have direct control over you. These people deserve more wedgies.

- Then there are the type that got the gig, because they know how to change a screen saver and wallpaper. Everyone in their office just learned to turn on the pc, and still have to have help loggin in, this guy can do it, so he's in charge. He really doesn't know anything, and is doing his best to either tell people so he go back to whatever it was he was hired for (but nobody is listening and they just want to see the cute kittens on their screen again), or he's soaking it in and trying to buy time to embezzel 100k out of the company's account.

Very true! I'm honestly a little bit of all three...depends on what kind of mood I am in/what kind of cereal I had that day.

Interns aren't worth mentioning.

NO, you forgot those that know a lot and are so SICK of stupid people!
If your job requires you to use a computer, and you can't that is a royal PITA and should not be permitted.
IT people get to be a**holes because so many clients are walking 'tards.

Quoted for the truth!

I'm a lower-level peon IT tech. I got hired at my job because I have a 3rd degree black belt in common sense...it just so happens that I know how to troubleshoot computer stuff, too.

There are people that call and basically say "computers and I don't get along" or "I'm from the old school" and garbage like that. If your job requires you to have BASIC (BASIC!!! TURN ON AND OFF, DOUBLE CLICK A MOUSE AND TYPE!) computer skills, then you better be up to snuff when I pick up your call. If you want us to help, you better expect to learn something too so you won't have to call us the next time you can't turn on your monitor because it isn't plugged in.

Can you imagine any other job where people get hired and don't know how to use the tools of the trade?

"Hi, I'm here for the mechanic interview"
"No, I don't know what a torque wrench is"

Gimme a break. That's what it's like being an IT guy.

We had a lady call us because her CPU Fan was making a buzzing noise and asked us if her PC was about to catch fire.....

I almost told her to call the fire department.....

That's where I was, when I got out of IT, after putting up with such people for almost 20 years.
