So long as ethanol fields don't replace the Chambord or Vodka crops, I'm cool.

To me, I always thought, "yeah, it's great for you corn states, and overall it helps everyone out (if we can get rid of the subsidies) by eliminating some amount of foriegn oil." So I was luke warm on the matter. Now that it's effecting me? Bah! Down with ethanol! I'm mostly a rum drinker, but heck, when I do want some cactus hooch, or enjoy a Margarita, I don't want to see the Pepe Lopez at $75/bottle or house 'Ritas $15 during happy hour! That just means decent, non-rot-gut Tequilla would start at $125!

Well, i dont blame them. Ethanol is big money now, and those corn farmers are benefitting from it for sure.

Good. It's about time the American farmer struck it rich. I'll laugh my butt off when the corn farmer is a billionaire and the Texas oil tycoon is broke.
Then again, we'll have the issue of corn prices going through the roof. If the hog and cattle farmers can't afford the feed, they will raise their prices too. Cheap gas = expensive food.

couple that with the minimum wage going to 7 something, we're going to see some great inflation soon.

That's true. It's too bad that we can't figure out a way to make fuel from other renewable resources. I read somewhere that certain types of bamboo can grow as much as 3 feet per day!! Can you imagine that? If we could get it to grow here and figure out a way to make gas from it, we'd be all set!

oh god please don't think like that. It's that whole grow fast process that brought kudzu (a crazy fast growing vine) here and now it's growing out of control and killing forests.

Ethanol from corn is already on the way out. Its all about cellulosic biomass now...corn has already been left behind for higher yielding biomass. Brazil uses sugar cane, for example. Ethanol will be produced locally, so whatever crops are grown in your area will be used to make ethanol.

This technology is nothing new btw...Henry Ford was running his early Model T in the 1880s.

Oiy! Blasphemy! Sure you may momentarily make some better cash on the corn, but you have a national treasure. Why destroy one of the best things your country is known for???

just spend $75k and get your house on solar energy. then you can get your money back from the government in rebates. then you can sell out your power to the neighbors. and MAKE MONEY! how about that?

we're all doomed for ecomonic disater eventually, again anyway. it's just a matter of time before China can't afford to sell anything cheap and the price of everything will skyrocket. And we'll still not make any money as an average American household. I sense another recession coming by the end of the year.

oh...yeah...ethanol...that'll save the day...right...uhm...you know that ethanol is made from crops that are harvested by farmers. well, the agriculture industry is extremely dependant on diesel fuel which comes from foreign oil to power their tractors and combines and trucks and such. after that, it cost alot of energy to actually make ethanol out of the harvested crops. which require alot of electricity from our ahem...coal power plants...then, ethanol fuels are not an energy efficient compared to gasoline. they cost less initially, but produce fewer mpg. about 25% fewer mpg on e85 compared to regular gas. but e85 isn't 25% cheaper than gas.

the real solution would have to be a group effort. e85 fuel harvested by agricultural equipment that runs on biodiesel and is refined using power from hydroelectric or wind powered generators. that would really help reduce dependence on foriegn oil and help the environment.
