IS THERE SUCH A THING AS "OLD ICE"?????? (in your
Ice can become "stale" over time. Fresh Ice usually has a clear look to it. Stale Ice or Old Ice will gain a white-ish hue or a foggy look. And it tastes funny. This is very evident if you have a purifyer hooked up to your ice maker.

If ice is kept in a controlled environment, I'm sure it would never become stale. However, ice in the back of the fridge? That's anather story.
My first job was at McD's and the ice machine was about five years old. Since the "fresh" ice pours out on top, and it had never been emptied, I'm sure there was plenty of "stale" ice near the bottom of it. Gross!

Ive heard of "Old Spice"...j/k
Ice left in the freezer for too long might come into contact with "dry ice" That would explain the unpleasantness of the ice in a drink. Dry ice is the white crap that forms on the walls of your freezer and is widely used for commercial storage of perishable food items. Dry ice is not for consumption.
On my frig/freezer there is a built in water filter, it keeps my ice nice and clean. Yummy!

Steph, I think Oprah's just crazy, he got the ice off the top of bin, that was the freshest ice in there. As long as your dad uses the ice every now and then, there is no way that ice was old.
