In Japan there's like 3 highly qualified students for every university seat.

S**T happens but most of it is in the U.S. .....

I believe that weapons should be illegal and to be used for only the military and law enforcement....
I know you were thinking what you said was your "opinion", but giving false information and then claiming it an opinion isn't what an opinion is. That's like saying, "the chair is red, well that's my opinion anyway." No, the chair is either red or isn't red, it isn't open for opinionated review.

Facts are facts. They are either correct facts or incorrect facts. Opinions aren't the same thing. Stating this "only happens in the US" isn't an opinion, it is meerly an incorrect fact. Stating that you think weapons should only be obtained by millitary and police forces is an opinion. I have opinions on your opinion there, but it's not important here. I also have facts that back up that my opinion is more correct than your opinion, but again, not relevant at this time.

The reality is this: despite the fear mongering going on in our press, the US is one of the safest places to live on the planet. Think of all the hell holes on the planet you could have been born in. This one isn't too bad. It's not Holland or Switzerland, but it's pretty good none-the-less.
I agree. I have been overseas and it is a **** hole. People hating the US are basing what they see from the press and what goes on in ghettos and inner-cities. I lived in Los Angeles for 19 years and it sucked compared to where I am now. Being able to breath fresh air, not deal with crowds and lots of crime is heaven. It sucks how these druggies and thugs are screwing up people's "opinions" about us Americans, but who cares...if you don't like it, then leave! One less person to worry about having to pay for your health care and welfare checks.

if you don't like it, then leave
Sorry, can't agree with that. If you don't like it, you're supposed to attempt to change it. Leaving is a rather drastic last resort, and is akin to quitting. Unless you are leaving for reasons that have nothing to do with anything other than job/family/lifestyle.

Civil disobedience, dissent, and hatred of obtrusive governement are as American as apple pie.

OK, if you don't like it, then shut up and make a difference...that sound better? Isn't that what we are taught since childhood, but people still continue to point fingers and complain.

I like apple pie!

how many clues do you need to know that someone is really ____ed up?
or do they have to kill people for you to actually realise that they may be slightly messed up in the head.
i was sad for all the people that died but now im ____ed because they had that many clues that this guy was a lunatic but they didnt do anything to stop it and im scared that this is gonna happen at my school.
all the things that guy did were obvious cases of a screwball. i guess for anyone to know he should've had a shirt that said someday im gonna make you regret coming to school and treating me like this.
R.I.P. for all the people who died there that could've been saved

I like that a lot better. But the sometimes you have to speak out to make a difference. The complaining and pointing fingers needs to go big time. I can't stand that. Either do something about it, or SFTU.

^I try to give people the truth about things through facts, training and my personal life experience without personal attacks and opinions. It seems whenever there is a controversial issue in the news, people want to be heard rather than be helpful.

My fiancee did 4 years in Panama in the Marines, he says it's nice down there and a good place to retire, but that was like back in the '90s.

I agree somewhat. I can't find myself placing too much blame on them, as I don't know the whole story, but it seems he showed tons of signs. They picked up the initial ones, but then left it hanging it seems like.

Also, in some way I feel for him, because he was bullied, that can't break alot of people who fill no support or love. They teased him about being quiet and his voice from what I heard from the news. I assume this started long before college.

In no way am I saying I understand what he did, but we have to teach or children about compassion. That there are allkinds of people in this world. I had my days of teasing, as I'm sure most did, but we have to curve this habit.

Panama isn't nearly as stable as Costa Rica. Plus, CR has the mountains to retreat to when the beach gets into the 90's. Costa Rica has had a stable government for over 100 years, and is known as the Switzerland of the Americas. Check out the Real Estate prices on craigslist, it's amazing.

Peru is just a bunch of farmers, and nothing really happens there.

Er... wasn't Shining Path in Peru? Or am I getting my countries confused?

Anyways - back to the whole "warning signs" thing on the shooter. Although it looks pretty obvious to us now, with 20/20 hindsight, I would say it would have been very unlikely that anyone could have intervened in a meaningful way beforehand. The writings, while pretty damn disturbing, are still just writings and is probably protected under Free Speech. His odd behavior and history of being bullied certainly didn't help but being "wierd" is not grounds for involuntary psychiatric restriction. I think the standard for involuntary committment in most states is something like; "imminent threat to self or others". I'm guessing the only criminal behavior would have been his stalking of other female students but even then - a restraining order, a piece of paper signed on a judges desk doesn't really provide a practical level of deterrance or detection. In short, he hadn't done anything beforehand that would have LET or REQUIRED any civil or medical authority throw him in jail or put him in a pyschiatric hospital on lockdown.
