Default Web browser

Just curious what web browser everybody's using.

I was using Avant - pretty good, but then switched to Mozilla firefox 2.0
I must say its pretty darn good. I think i'm going to keep as default. It has lots cool add ons and great security. Cnet has given it great comments and remarks also. I will never use IE or any version of it.

Firefox 2.0
(Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0)

Backup is Safari, then Camino, and if all else fails, Opera.

I've used Firefox since one of the 0.7 versions, and have beta tested both Camino and Firefox.

I last fired up Safari maybe two months ago...

For Firefox I recommend these addons...

MUSTS

Ad Block Plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/

Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them. Right-click on a banner and choose "Adblock" from the context menu - the banner won't be downloaded again. Or click Adblock Plus icon in the toolbar to see all elements of the page and block the banners. You can use filters with wildcards or even regular expressions to block complete banner factories

Adblock Filterset.G Updater
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1136/

This is a companion extension to Adblock or Adblock Plus and should be used in conjunction with it. This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days. Filterset.G is an excellent set of filters maintained by G for Adblock that blocks most ads on the internet. In addition, this extension allows you to define your own set of filters that you can add along with Filterset.G during an update. To report missed ads or problems with the extension visit the support forums http://forum.pierceive.com/.

Fasterfox
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1269/

Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.

Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with the unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.

A popup blocker for popups initiated by Flash plug-ins is also included.

FOR FUN

StumbleUpon
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/138/

StumbleUpon lets you "channelsurf" the best-reviewed sites on the web. It is a collaborative surfing tool for browsing, reviewing and sharing great sites with like-minded people. This helps you find interesting webpages you wouldn't think to search for.

eQuake Alert
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2239/

Did you ever thought of getting alerts on land disasters like earth quake, right on your desktop . eQuake is the solution for that.

eQuake alert is a handy add-on, which alerts you with the basic information (date, location, and magnitude) of each earthquake. By default your browser will shake proportional to the earthquake magnitude. You can configure the alert methods and even you can limit the alerts by the earth quake magnitude. The recent quakes menu provides a link to the detailed information of quake @ the USGS (US Geological Survey) website.

Keep in mind that this (and one of the built in hidden preferences of Firefox) "prefetches" the first or first several links it runs into on a page. In many cases, this means it will be downloading massive chunks of linked to stuff just in case you might click on it.

The load this poses on some servers, ESPECIALLY ON DISCUSSION FORUMS, slows the servers down for EVERYONE by downloading massive amounts of data that you will never look at.

SOME sites even ban users that cause problems by "prefetching" when all they really need is one page.

If you use FasterFox, please do NOT let it prefetch.

(Yes I use FasterFox, but I have the prefetching shut off so I don't swamp servers by downloading a bunch of stuff I don't want, anyway.)

Thanks,
Tomas

I didn't realize this. I just checked and the prefetching option was not selected. Thanks for the tip!

Tomas, you seem overly computer talented... any other swell addons you know about and can share?

If you have FasterFox installed:
In Firefox goto the
Tools menu and select
Add-ons. In the list, choose
Fasterfox and click the
Preferences button. Go to the
Fasterfox tab and un-check
Advanced Prefetch.

Works for me.

HTH,
Tomas
