Ford was a major share holder for years...like 15?r. The navajo is the same as the explorer...and so on. I could be wrong on this info, but it has been for years now. I think the REALLY old mazda trucks are the same as the ford courier (remember those?)

Off topic but they own part, if not all, of Jaguar and range rover

SOrry so long...I just found this. It breaks everything down as far as who owns who...Or is that who pwn3s who? LOL. I did not write it...just found it and copied it.

Who owns who
So, you're buying an English car huh? That fancy Jaguar with its birds eye maple... so much nicer than any American car. In fact, no American company can compete with its elegance you say. Well, hold on to your bowler because, as nice as the Jaguar is, it's now a Ford.

The automotive world is a complicated place now and with consolidation hitting everyone it's no surprise that car companies are gobbling up each other faster than ever before.

Now, just because Volvo sold their car division to Ford it doesn't mean you can get a Mustang engine in a S60 sedan. Nor does it mean you can get Ford Focus with an Aston Martin engine. But it does mean these companies with bigger parents have a better chance of surviving long-term because of better financial stability. In fact there's a good chance SAAB wouldn't be making new designs if it weren't for GM and I don't think Volvo would have had the money for their latest 'R' line of cars if Ford hadn't stepped in.

But in soap opera fashion sometimes these companies sell their divisions so quickly that the new parent doesn't even have time to make their own changes. What do we mean? The latest Range Rover (from Land Rover which is owned by Ford) comes with a wonderful BMW engine under the hood. Why? Because BMW bought the Rover group some years ago and sold the Land Rover lineup to Ford. To put it plainly, you'd be buying an English SUV with a German engine from an American company.

Use our chart below to see who owns who.

BMW owns:
-BMW
-Mini
-Rolls Royce

Daimler/Chrysler owns:
-AMC (brand discontinued -- Chrysler bought AMC primarily for the Jeep brand which was owned by AMC)
-Chrysler
-Dodge
-Eagle (brand discontinued)
-Hyundai (Daimler/Chrysler only owns 10% --13 May 04 changes!)
-Jeep
-Maybach
-Mercedes-Benz
-Plymouth (brand discontinued)
-Smart

Fiat owns:
-Alfa Romeo
-Ferrari
-Fiat
-Lancia
-Maserati

Ford owns:
-Aston Martin
-Ford
-Jaguar
-Land Rover (bought from BMW)
-Lincoln
-Mazda (Ford owns 33% of Mazda)
-Mercury
-Volvo cars

Fuji Heavy Industries owns:
-Subaru

General Motors owns:
-Buick
-Cadillac
-Chevrolet
-Daewoo (GM owns 44%)
-Fiat (GM owns ~20%) (GM has decided to divorce itself from Fiat as of Feb '05)
-GMC
-Holden
-Hummer
-Isuzu (GM only owns a percentage)
-Oldsmobile (brand discontinued)
-Opel
-Pontiac
-Saab
-Saturn
-Subaru (GM owns 20%)
-Suzuki (GM only owns a small percentage)
-Vauxhall

Honda owns:
-Acura
-Honda

Hyundai owns:
-Hyundai
-Kia

Nissan owns:
-Infiniti
-Nissan
-Renault (Nissan owns 15%)

PSA Peugeot Citroen owns:
-Citroen
-Peugeot

Porsche is an independent company (they do work very closely with VW, however)

Renault owns:
-Nissan (Renault owns 44%)

Toyota owns:
-Daihatsu (~51%)
Fuji Heavy Industries (Toyota owns ~20%. Toyota bought this from GM in late 2005. )
-Lexus
-Scion
-Toyota

Volkswagen owns:
-Audi
-Bentley
-Bugatti
-Lamborghini
-SEAT
-Skoda
-Volkswagen

LOL...I just looked back over this list...Nissan owns 15% of renault.....AND renault owns 44% of nissan? Thats kind of weird. Talk about 'personal interests'.

I wonder how the board meetings go?

Ok.. A relation between Ford & Mazda? Lets see here..

Ford Ranger = Mazda B series truck. The Ranger runs the Mazda built 2.3L.
Mazda 3 = Ford Focus (the new europe only focus, the states dont have this focus.) To through this out here, the Volvo S40 is also built on this platform.
Another one from back in the day. Mazda MX-6 was the Ford Probe. Not fully sure what was what & whos engine was used. I would guess both the 4 & 6 bangers where mazda built.

As for the topic of the RX-7 going away because of "Ford". I cant say I know for sure or not. Lets look this over, the RX-7 was still being sold in japan up until I think 2001. So it just droped off our radar here in the states. Why? In 1995 (Last year sold here) You had a 2 seater sports car that cost $37,800 sold from mazda. In 1994 it sold for $36,500. In 1993 it was $32,900. So just in a 3 year time frame the car price went up almost 15%. So if the car stuck around for 1996, lets say a 5% cost jump each year..

1996 = $39,690.00
1997 = $41,674.50
1998 = $43,758.23
1999 = $45,946.14
2000 = $48,243.45
2001 = $50,655.62

So the price would have been insane for what it was. Also sales was not that great because it was only 2 seater + the rotary engine takes a die hard owner to keep running proper. Another thing to look at is performance for the cost..

1995 RX- 7 / 0-60 = 5.3sec. Cost = $37,800
1995 Z28 / 0-60 = 5.7sec. Cost = $18,160
1995 Corvette / 0-60 = 5.2sec. Cost = $36,785 <also only came in auto.
1995 Viper / 0-60 = ~5sec. Cost = $56,000
1995 Cobra / 0-60 = ~5.5sec. Cost = $21,300
1995 3000GT VR-4 / 0-60 = 5.4sec Cost = $43,898

So as you could see, there where better things that where faster for cheaper. I think it was just the down fall of the turbo cars of that time. Even the VR-4 was killed because it cost to much for what it was. Same with the supra. So its just my idea that mazda stoped production in the states because it was not cost effective at that time.

All 0-60 times came from: http://www.missouri.edu/~apcb20/times.html All OG MSRP came from MSN autos.

Actually Ford did end the RX-7 its in the decemeber issue of road and track(i think) they do a hole spill on the last gen of the rx7 and how its a drives car. But when ford bought another X% in 1992/1993 of Mazda thats what killed the rx-7 cause they decided to jack the price to over 30k. But the rx-7 was continued in Japan until mid season 2002. They brought the rx-8 to repalce it but was designd mainly ford(hint no turbo/god awful ecu false report etc...) which dissappointed alot of people. Im at work I dont have the exact deatils about the rx-7 ill post it when i get home.

That's pretty bad when they have a dedicated forum for when your engine blows
