Until my work gets a volume license of it, or until the next two or three upgrades to it come out, I'm just gonna stay away from Vista.
Co-sign on Ubuntu. I was playing with that this past weekend and I'm pretty sure that when I start backing up my stuff, this will be the operating system I'm going to move to.
...although I have yet to see a combination of IM programs for Linux that would do just as much as DeadAIM and AIM 5.5; namely, the chat logging. =P

so does anyone think u could just buy this copy of win xp and get the coupon for an upgrade? then u would have an extra copy/serial for xp pro and also get the vista upgrade for the same price?

Im still looking into the whole "upgrade" vs "full" version of vista too. I dont want to get the upgrade if it only overwrites windows xp...I want the option to be able to clear all partitions and start a fresh copy of vista. Is that possible? I swear my XP copy I had was an upgrade and I just reinstalled and cleared the partitions with no problem? I will just be installing it on 1 pc that I will probably have for 3-5+ years since its newer.
Otherwise I would probably be fine to just get the vista OEM disc from newegg right? Its only $119 for premium, where its $149 from bestbuy

I'm actually getting my upgrade for free. HP/Compaq was one of the companies that had the "Buy this laptop during this time period and get a free Vista Upgrade." I bought a new laptop right after Thanksgiving and put in my order for my copy. I'm kinda pumped about it. Luckily that is my generic webbrowsing pc that I can take to work and such. Nothing important is done on it or will be done on it so I don't have to worry about anything screwing up. Hopefully nothing will anyway.
I used to work for Sony and they were saying the the Vista Home or basic or whatever it is called it's no better than XP....Most people would want the Premium version cuz that's the one that has the cool "floating glass" windows and all that other stuff that I don't remember anymore
I currently own an iMac and I'm happy with it, no problems whatsoever, no freezing, no CTRL-ALT-DELETE, no viruses and all of my peripherals work with it without installing software, built in camera and mic is nice too

Actually Trillian (not sure if it's linux compatible though) and gaim (I believe) have chat logging. (great for pulling up quotes when you're in arguments with the ladies
i just installed Vista Business Edition tonight ... im pretty pleased with it so far, but i need to get an update for my Norton Antivirus ... thats the only program that wont run properly from XP ... other than that i think its pretty cool, especially the Windows Aero Feature, and the Gadgets you can put on your destop i find them very usefull... so yeah GET IT ... if your comp can handle it ... oh yeah i got mine for free thats the only reason why i upgraded ... LOL :D
Don't buy it, it's horrible... Buy a Mac for the looks. Basically the install takes AT MINIMUM 30 minutes to install... Without problems... The first boot up takes 25 minutes... Every boot up after that takes 5.
Basically the first demo we set up with vista crashed... It's a pile of crap.

flow chart to answer the upgrade question.
i say you should just create a new partition and dual boot. keep your old stuff and play with the new. i also found that vista doesnt get along with some programs so it is nice to have a back up. but it does look pretty. vista installs much quicker in relation to installing xp.
i have the ultimate edition running 64bit and even though its a resource hog, i like it. you better have like 2 gigs of memory because thats what i have and it idles using 27% of that.
