I just bought a new lens! Canon 5200mm 1:14. It can shoot subjects in the 18- 32mile range. Yes, you read that right - 18-32 MILES.

If you are shooting in raw, try boosting fill light level just a little bit, it may help fill in a bit of the details in the dark areas of your photo.
I think doing something small like that would have very nice results.
if you are shooting in jpeg, than in photoshop you can play around with levels tool
to get to that you go to
image>adjustments>levels
if you'd like to be a bit more daring you can try curves adjustements
image>adjustments>levels
however curves is a bit on the complicated side. Levels adjustment is a bit easier.
in levels you get to individually control the levels of white, grey, and black in the image independently of each other, while curves allows you to pretty much control the those 3 different shades but also everything in between.
Or if you'd like to add more details in the shadow area without messing with PS, you can try bumping up the iso a bit.

but depending on where im shooting, if its outdoors i like to shoot raw and use HDR with PhotoMatrix and then touchup in photoshop. If its indoors I typically shoot manual, but I'm not having as much luck as I would like to, most likely because of the lens.
OH and always rockin the tripod!!
