Im still messing around with the cam. everything is better 3inch screen live view mode. spot metering 1600ISO Looks immaculate lose noise. LOVE IT. im not new to the 2.8 i have the Tamron 17-50 2.8 witch is the almost the same as the canon 17-55 minus the IS. btw im selling the tamron if anyone wants it.

Im new to DSLR but I just bought one for the heck of it. can someone tell me the perfect settings for outdoor still portrait type picture for a nikon d40x in manual mode. also the indoor. thanks

its depends on how bright it is out side. Look at your meter and it will tell you how much you need to adjust F/stop and or shutter speed.
the shot of the trunk is actually really nice.. i would say darken it up a little bit.. and if you want to take action shots.. speed up the shutter.. something like 1/1000 if you wanna freeze something moving that fast.. maybe even faster if you can
