DSLR Owners Unite! (56k? Are you kidding me?)
here's an example of one of my processed photos, this is one of the more dramatic ones
for anyone interested its done with raw adjustments, curves, and light rendering in ps.
standard boring photo taken through a dirty glass window. hazy looking looking a very bland. But thats all I could do with the camera in the current shooting conditions.

this is the after photo processed to my personal style. Please keep in mind I did not process this to be neutral or balanced. Its stylized to my own personal liking.

i see.
I didnt consider my processed photo neutral or balanced, so I considered it heavily processed considering it looks so different from the original. Ah well. haha I considered my example as a dramatic process lol. Then on my normal looking photos itd probably be considered nearly no processing.

Negative space? horizontal thirds? My head is hurting. I knew I should have just gone back 1 page not 4. bleh.
A few years ago I had a chance to talk with a few old school photojournalist from the LA Times. Although they were all using dslr's, their line of thought was if you need to post process using software, you're just a graphic artist. If I remember correctly, they said they make their adjustments on the fly with their camera before they take a shot.
With that in mind, the first two years I covered the Scion scene, I did no PSing in my futile effort to think I was a PJ. haha I also had no idea how to use PS anyhow. As I got to know more photographers in the import scene, they all said knowing PS is essential just like RnB mentioned a few posts ago. So now I do post precessing to make my crappy pics look less crappier. ha Anyhow, that's my experience with the two schools of thinking.
Whatever the case is, this is a great thread for everyone to read and participate in. Good job Robert.
And Happy B-Day Don.

well photo journalism is a bit different. The photos have to represent truth. They're more about capturing a moment and telling the news in a photo. So Id assume a lot of them do minimal if any processing.
I recall a story a while back that a newspaper used a photo that had a persons severed arm digitally removed from the photo and it created great controversy with the newspaper.
photos printed in the news usually have to remain as it was taken.

its pretty difficult to tell you how to process a photo. First off, what style of look are you trying to go for?
there are some that like low contrast desaturated and some that like high contrast heavily saturated, some like crushed blacks or blown highlights with heavy contrast. or possibly you want to edit a photo to resemble more like film? (which is what I tend to see in your color photos)
it all depends on the look you are trying to achieve. If you are just trying to standard color correct than thats another option. which just basically involves curves adjustment and white balance correction.

Yeah I was trying to edit it to look like film. I LOVE the look of film. Miss shooting film BIG TIME.
It's the reason I am considering picking up a HOLGA 120 camera
all the comp in your photos are fine, if anything the 3rd pic of the tree, the BW version is cropped better than its color counterpart that has a bit more taken off the top. So Id say the weakest is the last color however its BW version is better. And thats being nitpicky
all of them are fine however the way they are composed.
