how bout i down grade to a walmart disposable camera lol... nothing to worry and save thousands of dollars. yeah canon vs nikon could get annoying especially when fanboys steps in blurs the truth.. actually i need some of reviews on both coz im kinda thinking of making a switch to nikon.. havent spend too much on canons yet but right now will be the time to decide
Because it is a kit lens. I've often seen it packaged with the D300. My 18-105 that came with my D90 is a kit lens and it's pretty good for everyday shooting or consumers who never take the included lens off their camera. It doesn't take bad pics, but after using some of the top lenses from Nikon (70-200, 24-70, 300 f4, 14-24) its shortcomings become more obvious. I don't think there's any lens Nikon makes that you can't get a decent picture with. All I'm saying is that if you're gonna upgrade then actually upgrade. Don't sidestep.
i want a wide angle but cant bring myself to buy one for my current body (D60) the only lens i would buy for this body would be an 18-200 because as snow said a lot of my trips are one time things and i hate having to switch back and forth. once i get a full body - body im gonna make sure it comes with a 18-XXX lens so i can have a "full time" lens and then i can buy toy/specific lenses.
If I had just a body and no lenses, then sure I'd opt for the 18-200 to get started. But speaking from experience, I had the 18-55 and 55-200 and never thought to myself I need to consolidate into one lens because I don't feel like changing them.
