i love when the lighting is just perfect in a room. always grab my camera :-)

here's one of my good natural light shots...

does anybody else ever experience that? like you are just hanging out in your living room and all of a sudden the light is just amazing for pictures and you just have to start snapping away? there's something about good natural light that makes me go picture crazy.

jon I noticed that you seem to crop all the pics you're taking, may I suggest trying to compose photos where you wont have to crop an image? IMO I think as a beginner its good to train yourself to compose photos without cropping. Itll save you post processing work and time further down the road. not to mention making prints will be a lot easier.

im new to the dslr world too, but i force myself to not crop an image, IMO itll make my framing abilities that much stronger later on. I think in about 5000+ photos Ive taken with my camera Ive cropped 1 image and that was when I first began using it. I leave my badly composed shots alone as a reminder to me to frame subjects better

DOF is an acronym for depth of field.

there are two types

shallow and deep.

shallow = subject is in focus while background is nicely blurred. This blurred background is also referred to as "Bokeh" a japanese word meaning fuzzy pronounced like "Boh-kay"
people like these shots because simply put its aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

deep = everything is in focus, this is usually used on scenery and city scape photos.

personally I dont like photos that are completely in focus, because it flattens the look of the photograph. However this is just my opinion.

you can attain shallow depth of field two ways
- huge wide aperture i.e. anything below a 2f.
or
- if you are using a narrow aperture than you have to move farther away from the subject than zoom in tightly.

also make sure if you are using auto focus keeping it to a single focus point, smaller focus area = shallow dof opportunities.

I personally have it on the center point, auto focus and shift my lens to create the composed shots than press the shutter.

hold the lens from the bottom with the underside of your hand to support the weight. The manual shows illustrations on how the camera should be held.

Yeah tungsten. I usually set my white balance if I am sure of the lighting. But if I am not sure I just put it on awb and shoot in raw.

I shoot in raw+Ljpeg. Raw is the complete file and not compressed at all. Anything lower is a compressed version of the file. With RAW u can go back and edit stuff like white balance even after the picture is taken. The only downfall is the files are huge and u have to convert them into tiff files I think is what its called.
