Default Scion novice needs info...

I am very interested in buying either xA or xB. I am leaning more toward the xB. I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

1) I know that the cars don't have a lot of hp. How much of a difference will adding a Cold Air Intake make?

2) If the dealership doesn't have the car I like, does it take long for them to order one?

I would also appreciate any information that would be helpful in making the decision.

1. Truly it all depends on the individual intake, as well as will you be getting a 5 speed or an automatic. The 5 speed will have substantially more useable HP/ torque because of the gear ratio. A genuine CAI will net more gains than a simple short ram intake will. Most of the time, you will barely be able to notice much of a difference on the proverbial "butt dyno" unless you are planning on an intake/ header/ exhaust upgrade. Companies like Monster Motor Works (http://www.monstermotorworks.com) are currently boasting a CAI with gains of 8.1HP and 11.1TQ which will run you around $200. They also have what they call the stage 1 kit which gets you an intake/ ram air duct/ race header which is boasting power gains of 21.8HP and 22TQ and that will run you aroun $525.

2. I am currently not sure what the current wait time is on xB's it generally depends on the options and the availability of the color you want. You could message a user on here who goes by Scion_South. He is the Scion Manager at Scion South in Richmond, KY. He could probably tell you what kind of wait time you could expect.

I hope this helps.

It says in your signature that you are in Mississippi. I am going to move this topic to that region (Deep South) so that you may be able to get more localized help.

Thx. I used this because I live across the border from Tennessee (about a .5 mile from Memphis). Sorry about the confusion.

You were very helpful.

I don't necessarily see that the Deep South will help out more. I'll wait a couple of days to see if there are any positive responses... then I'll move this topic... again!

But to help out, you can always just call up your dealership and ask them how long the wait is for whatever color you're looking for. Their guess may not be too accurate, but it's better than anything any of us can personally say. Some people waited MONTHS, some waited DAYS.

As for some power increase... intake, headers, exhaust... I don't care what anyone says... together, at MAX, an I/H/E combo will give you 15 hp (at MAX!)...

But think about this. How much more are you willing to pay for a Honda or a Ford for the extra horse? People always nag about spending money to get extra horse out of these cars. There's a huge price difference between Accords and xAs. Am I justified in getting a turbocharger (hypothetically) for the extra 30 HP? YEAH! Price per HP, an xA with a tc is cheaper than a stock Accord.

Anywho... what were you asking?!

I am glad that the you are replying. This information has been very very informative. I am not mechanically inclined so any information is extremely useful.

My overall intention with the Scion is to have good gas mileage and enough hp/torque that will be close to or equall to my 94 civic with 126 hp. I don't race so I am not wanting to spend thousands of dollars on tc'ing the engine. Just something that will help me pass people and get on the interstate. I thought that just by adding a CAI would do the trick.

Any suggestions with that bit of information.

Thanks

I moved it here so he could get a response for question #2 from a dealer close to him. I know that from talking to dealers in different areas that wait times on ordered vehicles can vary depending on how many they currently have on order, etc. I figured that a deep south dealer could let hm know what their wait times are and let him know what they might currently have available.

Generally, the intake ALONE won't do anything noticeable. I have a K&N intake in my xA right now. I can tell that it's accelerating a little better... but it's probably placebo from the sound it makes.

Add on an exhaust and header and you'll definitely notice some increase in power. I don't know if you'll get 126 HP, but it'll definitely be close.

Funny thing is... I don't have a hard time passing people on the Interstate around here...

Do you have any recommendations on the exhaust and header? How much would I spend on something like that and can scion install them? The reason that I want Scion to install them is to keep it under warranty if anything happens.

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to getting all the information I can before I jump in.

You guys have been very helpful so far.. thx.

The dealership usually will NOT install aftermarket parts for you. Nothing you put on your car can affect warranty unless it's proven that whatever you put on is the cause of the problem. Even still, I wouldn't worry about warranty problems. Tons of people on here have used this and that exhaust, header, and intake. And I haven't heard about too many people having problems.

If you get quality parts, then nothing will happen. Get an experienced shop to put it on for you if you don't know how to.

For exhaust and header, I would recommend DC Sports (my own preference).

What will this (I/H/E) modification do to gas mileage?

MPG will increase slightly. Supposedly, if you drive the same way you do before you get I/H/E, you can increase your mileage by 3-4 MPG or more!

But most of time, if you have I/H/E, you'll want to push you car a little more...

gg has been shooting straight with all his info....the only thing is, you can get an engine to breathe too freely. You need a certain amount of back pressure to effectively use the power made. So, when looking at headers and exhaust, don't go too much bigger than stock sizes.

A lot of us here are always more than happy to help out folks that ask intelligent questions....
