Default ***NEED SPARK-PLUG REPLACEMENT for WARRANTY!***

My girlfriend has an xA right at 30k miles. She read in the manual that it is REQUIRED to have all her spark-plugs replaced or else her emission control warranty would be voided. I'd assume all of you have had to deal with this if you have hit 30k miles, or any multiple of it...

So, she called a scion dealership and they want $290 for the whole 30k service (oil, rotation, and spark plugs). Do you guys know of any techs at dealerships who could do it, or do just the spark plugs for any cheaper.

I've got a VW and know a ton of the VW techs, but I doubt they'd want to pull a scion into their bays.

Thanks in advance guys!

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard, on both counts

#1 There's no way to tell exactly how many miles are on plugs. Either they are worn or not, and your emissions warranty cannot be voided for simply not replacing the plugs. That could get Scion/toyota is a whole lot of trouble, as the emissions warranty is part of a federal requirement.

#2 $290 for plugs/LOF? What dealer? I'll never go there. Do it yourself for $25!

I've had good luck with Superstition Springs and Big Two as far as service, and Camelback comes highly recommended as well.

Does anyone know who to talk to at Camelback? I first want to find out if this is required maintenance or recommended...and then how to get the price down. I found a dealership in NY that does the WHOLE 30k service for 190 where ones here in AZ charge 290...

Yes, it is the 4cyl. I would do it myself but a shop has to print-out paperwork claiming they did the service or else warranty won't have verification that they were ever changed...

Check the owners manual for replacement intervals. Keep the receipt of purchased spark plugs from Autozone/Dealer/Walmart whatever in case it's ever disputed. What dealer is this?

She bought it from Right Scion. So they don't need to see paperwork about them being installed? Only that we purchased new ones??

I could be wrong, but I believe by law a dealer cannot force you to use them. I do not think they can even force you to use an ASE certified mechanic/technician. Not for something that simple. As long as you can show that you purchased the parts and said you installed them yourself, there is not much they can do. Same with oil changes. Now, they can deny warrentee work if you never completed the service. The bottom line is the service should be required, but they cannot tell you who to have do it, but they could blame you if the plugs were installed wrong and not cover it unless you are ASE certified.

But I would do as much maintenance as possible at the dealer as they keep better records then I do.

All you have to do is keep the receipt for the plugs and you can change them yourself.
The reason they say to change em @ 30k is they are regular plugs not platinum it's easy I did mine in about 15 min.
