As most of you know, my parents own a liquor store back in Maryland. One service we offer is cashing checks. We recently had a few of these checks come back to us...about $10,000 worth. They were tax refund checks and they were stolen...AND they were altered.

For those of you who get a check in the mail you know that the monetary amount is printed as such: $****178. Why there are stars there I DO NOT KNOW, but obviously someone was smart enough to take advantage of it. They were taking checks for the above amount, somehow erasing a star and replacing it with...hrmmm a 4 sounds good. So we just cashed a check for $4000 more then it should have been for. Most of these checks will clear at first...until someone calls the government and says I never got my check. They look back, see it was cashed somewhere else, AND see it was altered and BAM we are out all of the money.

We have a $16,000 computer at our store that scans checks to assure they are real...and it does work, and it also keeps a profile of each person who cashes checks...drivers license, ss number, finger prints...and still we can't catch them all.

That's not the best part folks...This has been happening for over a year....and just now...we are feeling the brunt of the hit. Assuming other checks were also stolen, the IRS has gone through every check we have cashed of theirs and has put a hold on the amount for each one they are sure was stolen...the grand total?? $60,000. Other store in our ares were hit as well...one for $120,000!!!! Did the IRS ever contact us (whom by the way MUST be registered with them to even be allowed to cash government checks....so they have our contact info) to let us know that this was happening? So that we could be aware and on the lookout??? Most of this situation could have been avoided.....at least I dunno $40,000 worth of it.

We will NEVER see this money again....if we do it will be on the day it snows in July in the valley....what happened??

Someone....some "head hancho" is paying these illegals to steal checks...they are altering them and then paying them to cash them. They supply them with the fake IDs and once the check is cashed they bring it back, collect their fee and they go off and do it again. Either this is some A$$hole that is a US citizen taking advantage of illegals and the government (which is ultimately does not affect) or it is another illegal who I guess has almightly power and is sending the money back to their country. We know this happens because we also do western union and most of them who live here...illegal or not, send money to their country.


IT IS NOT FAIR FOR PEOPLE WHO DONT BELONG HERE TO COMMIT FEDERAL CRIMES AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

WHY CANT ANYONE IMPORTANT SEE THIS????????

Go ahead and vent, alot of people feel the same way you do, but are scared to say anything cause they will be labeled a 'racist'. Sorry to hear about what happened to your family. I hope things can be cleared up.

 

That is completely f-ed up. I am so sorry. I always believe in justice being served, but sometimes it's a long process. I hope all works out.

WOW that's messed up! It's okay to vent. if not you become mentally disturbed and go crazy! I know some people who are Mexican and don't like illegals. It give's them a bad name and they said they would have no problem if they did it the legal way!
