questions about web-hosting
The company I work for currently uses Godaddy for web hosting and email. They have very aggressive "protection" policies that are actually interfering with our business, preventing customer email from reaching us. Here are some examples:
we cannot receive email from a local school district because they have been blacklisted for spamming. The school district IT department says they have tried, but godaddy will not remove them from the list.
we cannot receive email from ASU. The explanation is that one computer at ASU is infected with a virus, so the entire dynamic IP pool has been blocked.
we cannot receive email from at least one of our customers in Korea. I don't remember the explanation, but I think it had something to do with outdated technology.
we cannot receive email from the University of Texas @ Arlington. First they said it must be because of a virus, similar to the ASU situation, but they use different technology. Then they said it must be because some text in the email (from our customer) was identified as indicating the message was spam or phishing. On the godaddy site they say bad english and poor grammar are indicators of these. Many of our customers write very poor english, similar to what you see in some of the phishing emails.
Most of our business is done with Universities and people overseas, so these situations will always occur. It's getting worse, we find a new person that can't send us email just about every week.
Here are the questions.
Is godaddy more aggressive than everyone else, or is this the new industry standard?
If it is standard, is the use of email for business purposes going to become extinct? It's one thing to not be able to receive personal email, but our customers think we are unresponsive and/or ignoring them.
Can anyone recommend a different host that does not have these problems?
I'm not trying to bash godaddy here, just trying to figure out what our options are. Obviously people want these protections (or at least godaddy thinks they do) and they sound great on the surface, but in practice they are hurting our business.
What do you guys think, got any ideas?

I use IPowerweb.com and I have the abilty to block whom what where etc. its pretty much open.
Sometimes too much it too much, example I had a internet security suite software.. Loved it.. did the last upgrade and OMG they almost wont let me surf the web with all thier restrictions.
So back to the older version and I'll stick with firefox w/scriptblocker and the plugins I have.
Sorry and I did not answer anything above.. Wheres Troy when you need him.. he works there.

I thnik Cliffud works there too. Other than the not getting emails thing, godaddy is great. Customer service is great too, they just can't do anything about our email problem.

dudehitt - yeah, some say godaddy's spam filter is aggressive and i actually do miss e-mails that are sent from overseas and locally at times.
If you want a more neutral host, check out pair.com. They're fairly priced and I used to use them 7 years ago before I signed up with GD. Now if I know someone from overseas will be e-mailing me, I just tell them to e-mail me at my yahoo.com account.
