there was one done in california. it cost around 7-9k to do the job. IMO it looks like a fugly cabriolet. as to who can do it here in the great lakes you may want to try a shop that that has Cali based workers due to their experience in modification lowriders and such. there is a local oldies shop near my house. maybe they can do it but im not sure if they will be able to do it.
I am looking for someone that will do a good job for them - I'm not the ordinary "dealer" I want things done the way I want them!! But, at the same time expense with quality is an issue for them.
Thanks All

You are not going to be able to beat the price and reliability done by the guy in CA. He worked with a company doing research to make it reliable and driveable. If you take it to anyone there lies the risk of damaging the integrity of the vehicle. It is not as easy as putting a convertible on a mini truck or a roadster hot rod. If you reinforce the car wrong (to much or to little) the headaches that will result are never ending and the car will not be worth much. Companies made convertibles for the new beetle when it first came out but they had areas to hide reinforcment. In an xb you are not as lucky.
But hey that is my .02 worth.

its just a shame to see such a thing.
but like mentioned above, i have seen the chopped minivan and it looks ok, but i have heard it lacks integrity.
and the only xb i've seen is that one in cali

Trust me on this one, if you reinforce a car in the wrong spot or not enough it creates major problems. I have worked the last 8 years in computer aided engineering and seen many NVH analysis results. The car flops aroung like you would not believe (since on the computer you do not usually add limits to the movement) how much parts move and how quickly things begin to fail That is why car manufacturers have two to four year development times on new vehicles.
But if you want to find a shop try finding a shop that builds prototypes. Here in MI there is ASC that developed the chevy convertible truck and the 300M convetible concept.
