Default Need Advice on visiting Hawaii

I haven't been to Hawaii in 20 years, but I've always felt it was where I was meant to be! So I'm finally planning on going back this Spring or Summer...

Which island is best to visit? Not too touristy, but not too backwoods either. Best places to visit, best place to stay, what to avoid, etc. I can get some good deals to Kona, Hilo, Honolulu... Oh, and where are the best places for JDM Scion stuff...hahah

anywhere on the island of o'ahu would be the best things to do... the other ones are kinda boring really.. except for certain things in maui.

slightly touristy when it comes to waikiki especially, and then the Polynesian Cultural Center is a nice spot to visit as well... (it's in Laie).. just one of those... "hmmm.. it's cool... gotta go there at least once" things.. but it's normally touristy area that have the more funs/enjoyable things to do.

hmm... for relaxin' at a beach, i would have to say Kailua is your best choice.

and then avoid chinatown at night... lol.

there's plenty of local Scion people i know in maui and o'ahu that you can hook up with too.

oahu would be a good choice, if you were on a honeymoon or something of that sort i would go to maui of the big island...I believe i just saw some tv programs on the travel channel that featured Hawaii. maybe they'll replay it cuz even though i live here it was still very interesting to watch.

Assuming Oahu;

Avoid Chinatown at night.

Don't take pork over the hill to the other side of the island.

Don't knock over the stone piles you see sometimes in the middle of nowhere

Don't take the lava rocks. (I guess this doesn't really apply on Oahu)

If you go hiking in the hills, wear mosquito repellant.

SUNSCREEN.

Learn to surf
Learn to windsurf (someplace sheltered)

Don't buy the chintzy tourist stuff in the marketplace.

Check out the surfing at the North Shore - DON'T surf there if you don't know what you're doing.

Go kayaking. Away from honolulu - too many people.

The view from Diamond Head is awesome.

Great tips guys! It looks like I'll be spending most of my time outside of Honolulu/Waikiki area...

Squall, you from Hawaii?

Hi Everyone:

I'm currently on Oahu on a business trip and will be here through Sunday morning, the 6th. I'm tied up during the day, but my evenings are free.

Along with the suggestions already posted, what others do you have? FYI, I'm staying in the Pearl Harbor area.

My goal is to get some good food (don't translate this into "expensive" because it doesn't have to be, just good!) and see some good sights. I LOVE to people watch, but I'm not a stalker.

Are there any rides scheduled during my visit? Where do all the xB folks hang out? If I have an address, I have my TomTom with me.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Man, I'm gonna miss it because I fly back to L.A. on Sunday. Then, off on a quick overnighter to Washington, D.C. on Monday and back to L.A. on Tuesday. . . . boy, talking about jet lag!!! I'm definitely gonna have it!

Regarding food, some good BBQ or grilled chicken would be great. I'm looking for something kinda healthy, but doesn't taste like it.

These were my 2 favorite places on a budget:

Ono Hawaiian
726 Kapahulu Avenue
Authentic Hawaiian food and really friendly owners. Not touristy at all. Its small so get there early.

and

Waiola Shave Ice
2135 Waiola Ave
Azuki, condensed milk, and mochi is my favorite. People will recommend Matsumoto's on North Shore, but Waiola's way more superior!!!! Lightest, fluffiest shaved ice I've ever had. Not touristy at all.

Also, since you have internet access, Yelp.com is an excellent resource

well there is Dixie grill which is real close to pearl harbor. they got some good burgers, and ribs. I dont know if its real healthy. sam choy's breakfast lunch and crab is good. its on Nimitz hwy. not the cheapest place but the food is real good. other than that, we got places you already been. try and look for small local places, you can get a good take out plate lunch. if you like curry, there is curry house near pearlridge. hmmmmm, im trying to think of others. if you can try and pick up one of those free mags near waikiki they have a lot of other suggestions.

sorry we cannot hook up with ya, so you can see the scion scene here. next time you in town give us early notice, and for sure we can do something.
