Houston Autorama
I dont know about Scion reps. Our set up day is today and manana so I will post what I see after we get set. I wish they would have a complete tuner, street section...maybe one day! Our booth is somewhere near the entertainment wherever that is...just gonna be selling custom Tees and graphics...taking pics.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Ok...what I saw was acres of beautiful paint, chrome and inspiration of the automotive kind. This place is huge...bigger than last year me thinks. There are zero Scions as far as I could tell. Mind you...its huge but I didnt see a one or tuner cars period. Funny but there is only one really lifted show truck(we are the booth right next to it) in the entire event. Yep...its no Heatwave but a collection of some of the best customs on the planet. All the regular common crap is gone and all the very cool stuff is actually there. Well not all...I drive a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and attend about 30 shows a year. Where is the well done Cherokee? Sorry...just my rant! Have a great weekend and hope to see you at the show or at least in San Antonio for Face Off!!!!
Funny why nobody actually shows the Scions or more imports. To show is only $50 and that gives you two four day passes. Certaily feasable for any Scion club to make a statement. Another funny thing was there really was only one super lifted truck...in Houston Tx?
I think diversity is the spice of life. I love the classics but there is a whole other world involved in the sphere Autorama. Having HoustonImports.com this site and several others you would think somebody would show other than a couple of the Z clubs. The motorcycles are starting to make inroads into these events but imports are still lackluster. There is a huge youth attendance at these shows and they get a coupe foto ops with the mockups from the CARS movie, bike stunt team and globe of death. Where are the Honda clubs, Scion clubs, Subaru, Mitsu and exotic Nissans? Hell...where were the lifted trucks?
Autorama has really gone downhill over the past few years. Back in the late 90's, Autorama would take up 3 different venues in the Reliant Plaza (Astrohall and Arena, at the time). This year, they were hard-pressed to fill up half of a single floor of the GRB. The price has risen and the value has diminished. It is almost depressing.
As was stated before, there has been little to no representation of other avenues of automotive expression beyond the basic build-ups or resto jobs. Part of this, in my opinion, stems from a lack of acceptance between one choice and another. It is all too common. The resto guys dislike the modified cars, the die-hard big 3 guys dislike the imports, the import guys dislike the V8 cars, blah blah blah. It's the usual BS.
I overheard a few comments that really proved my point this past weekend. Some idiot referred to the ONLY xB on display as "one of them there Ski-ons" and how it "was stupid" and must belong to some "spoiled rich kid". The biggest laugh of this comment was the fact that the originator and his quite heavy female companion (wife/sister) could easily have counted the total amount of teeth between them simply by holding up two hands and counting fingers! I laughed so hard I almost fell over!
Another prime example was a comment from an older gentleman (obviously a resto guy) about Foose's Hemisfear being a "complete waste of money and time". Apparently, he didn't appreciate the effort, hours of labor, or endless attention to detail that went into building such a machine.
You would think anyone who had spent any reasonable amount of time restoring and/or modifying a car would, in one form or another, appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that are poured into many of these cars, whether they fit into their chosen category or not.
