thanks to the sport city scion guys from a happy customer
I bought my car from sport city scion about 1 month ago now, and it was a very different car buying experience... but in a good way! I just wanted to share my experience in case anyone wanted a recommendation on a dealer to use - go see the scion guys on Northwest highway @ Shiloh in Garland (Dallas).
First of all, I was doing this purely out of economy - I have 3 huge gas guzzling trucks/SUVs, and was getting tired of paying 80 bucks every four or five days to get gas. I only looked at the honda element and the xB, I think the Vue looks like poo. I needed to have an enclosed car - so pickups were not in my list. I liked the honda interior better, but that was it. The xB, IMO was better in everything else. I went and drove the honda, and then went right across the way to the toyota place and drove the xB.
What I'm used to is sitting in a dealership for hours doing paperwork, hagling over prices, watching a guy run back and forth to some 'manager' guy behind a 1-way window up in a booth to ask how he can skrew me for another hundred bucks..
It was much better than that at sport city scion. But it didn't look like it was going to be, at first..
I walked up the lot and there were a bunch of red shirt guys all around the front area.
I approached and asked one of them to show me a new scion xB and a tC please.
The guy just looked down at the ground, and all the other guys sort of settled back also,,, then he says " we are toyota guys, we can't show you a scion".
I didn't know if they were joking or what - I just sort of chuckled and said ' no really, I want to see one in black pearl'. He replied ' let me get the scion guys for you, sir'.
I'm thinking OK.... strange deal here... a new car shar, err, salesman is handing me off to someone else?? This can't be good...
So in a few minutes, this guy approaches us and introduces himself as Charles. We tell him I want to test the xB and my wife the tC. He goes away for a minute, and comes back and flips us the keys and is pretty much like " you have insurance? ok go have fun"....
I'm thinking OK.... strange deal here... a car salesman is handing me the keys to a car and he doesn't even know my last name yet,,,,, and he isn't even getting in the car to go with us???
So we haul as$
We come back in a few, and swap keys and take the tC.
After a bit, we come back and talk to Charles about the cars. He gives us all the details, etc. and we check out the cars on the lot. Most of them were custom xA's.
He only had a few xBs, 1 RS3, and like 2 tCs, that was it.
So I tell him I only want a base model with nothing, because I'm a cheap bastard, and how much will he come off the sticker? He told me they sell for sticker price, and what you see is what you get - you start base and everything is an addon. I never have bought a car that way, so it struck me as odd. But - looking back on it - that policy cut out sooo much BS with price haggle/options, etc. it is incredibile.
Anyways - we tell him thanks and we cut out.
We go back like the next day or two, and Charles isn't there, but another guy named Jeff is. I tell Jeff I want to order a black pearl xB and Jeff tells me a black one is like 3 weeks away, if he can even get it.
!! If he can even get it ?? These things are that hot ??!!?
He said he had a shadow mica one that was down in the port (H-town!) still, but coming to his dealership in like 2 days - this color is new for 06 scion, and he had me go look at a forerunner in the same color. It was right next to a black one, and the mica metal-flaked paint made the black pearl paint look cheap, so I went back inside and put my name down on that mica one he had coming in right then.
J called the next day or two, and said the car was in already - I was quite suprised at the speed of delivery to Dallas. I asked him if we could do any of the paperwork over the phone to speed anything up - and if it could be done - could he please transfer me to the correct department. He laughed at me and said 'lets go' -
I was like 'what?' -
he said - 'to fill out the paperwork man!'
We filled out everything, right then, over the phone.
He had me all papered-out in about 30 minutes - so I didn't have to leave work, go down there, etc., etc.,etc.
I couldn't get my car for a few days due to some other things going on, so when I finally got down there again, all I had to do was go see the finance guy.
In all honesty - this was the only 'bad' part of my experience - and it wasn't that it was 'bad' - but it's not like the rest of the 'scion' mindframe IMO.. but I had to go see a toyota finance guy. IMO they need scion finance guys with the same attitudes, style, etc., of the scion sales guys. It seemed like they worked so hard to seperate scion and toyota to the public appearance when I came in,, so why this toyota guy now this late in the process?
This guy put a 'more traditional' sales guy approach on me - hammering me for warranty, protection, hazard BS, extensions, jacking my rate up .4%, etc.
I was actually interested in extending the warranty bumper to bumper 5/yr and windshield replacement, but passed on all the other crap.
Even though I didn't so much enjoy it, it was over very fast. By this time they already had the car all lined out and sitting in the front parking area, so I was completely ready to go.
I think Charles actually delivered the car to me and gave me the crash-course new owner thing, but Jeff actually sold me the car,,, but Charles was the first guy I talked to and tested with, etc.,... it seems... like... these guys... are working . .. together????
That's freaking unheard of at a car dealership - and that's what probably impressed me most. Seems like they just want to sell cars, they didn't sweat who had me first, or who closed the deal, or anything like that at all. Both guys were fun to work with, completely laid back, no pressure at all ,etc.
I even sat around and ate some chocolate chip cookies with them and hung out for awhile and talked about mods LOL. How cool is that?
And even better - like a week later I got a tin full of chocolate chip cookies in the mail as a thank you gift
Go see Jeff and Charles the scion guys -
Tell them Saylor sent you!

Your experience is not anything out of the ordinary, it's the norm with them. That's what they do. You need to come out to an event and meet everyone else that have done the same thing. Welcome to the Scion FAMILY!
This is funny because I was just thinking on the way home tonight about starting a thread about the awesome dealers in the area. Where people could post up about great experiences they have had and where we could all pass some kudos around where they are deserved....
so I think i'm going to go do that now....
so I think i'm going to go do that now....
hey welcome to the scion community. you should come out anyways. i came to my first meet with a big dent in the rear. the scion people wanted to help me get it fixed. they didn't even know me. now they are like a second family. so just come out to the show and get some ideas. hope to see ya soon
Welcome to the community. I agree with what everyone said. Sport City rocks and they've been rockin' with the community since day 1. We would love for you to come to our shows/events. See you soon. PEACE. D2E.
The Scion Guys do it right. Welcome to the family. I just got back from California expecting to see some bad Scions. I saw 1 xb with wheels, lowered and exhaust, every other one I saw was dressed in hubcaps and riding stock. I was shocked, I hardly see one in DFW with hubcaps. But it doesn't matter how you ride, cause it is your ride.
