Moving to Phila.
So I got a job with Protiviti starting in July, as a Technology Risk Consultant. I am graduating from Penn State, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some housing questions.
I have talked to a few people and they said that if I live in the city it should be in center/east/west, not North of South Phila. On the other hand the majority of the people in the office recommend that I move outside of phily b/c its cheaper.
Anyone one have any suggestions??? I wouldn't mind having a roommate but more than likely I will be livin by myself.
I appreciate any info.
Oh yeah and hows the scion scene down there?

If you are planning to stay there a while, buy a place in philly - do not rent. You can get a house in philly really freakin' cheap (south of 150 grand easy) so it doesn't make sense to rent.
I would suggest driving around philly to get a feel for the area and then talk to some local realtors in areas that you liked.
good luck homey,

nope i live at sutton court atm so i park at the sunoco across the street.
anyways , i would probably suggest to find a place in northeast philly..
south philly is kinda cramped(small streets, even smaller parking spots =o) up compared to the rest of the city.
west and north are also not that great neighborhoods unless ur really far west
also anywhere near center city is more expensive then the rest
if you are considering buying a house .. you'd be shocked at how low they can go. one of my neighbors bought his house for just under $30,000 . but then again if i were you i'd rather rent in a better neighborhood

I currently live in the suburbs of Philly (about 20 minutes away) I attended Drexel University right in Philly and lived there for 6 years. My opinion is to try and live closer to the outer areas if not outside of the city. Yes, commuting sucks, but you will pay more in bills and in taxes if you live in the city.
As others have said, unless you pay more you will have trouble parking in some areas. Also, some areas are not as great, and the ones that are can be pricier. I would say look to some of the burbs. You will be close enough to enjoy the city with out some of the hassels.

Wow, thanks for the great advice. I still am hung up on either living in the city or the burbs. I just dunno about that morning commute... I am not a big fan of traffic. Damn but buying a house seems hella cheap, sounds like Ima really have to consider this one. Thanks again.
I suggest living in far Northeast Philly, which is where I'm from. It's safe out there. Try to avoid most areas of Kensington, Fishtown, Far West Philly, past 50th Street, most of South Philly since it's crowded, and a lot of North Philly unless you don't mind hearing gun shots every night. The person mentioning buying rather than renting is right, it's worth it. You can also rent out your place to gain more profit. I think you get some tax relief by doing this, but I'm not sure. If you look to live outside of Philly, it'll be tough since a lot of those homes will be expensive, such as in Lower Merion. You can try my town of Bensalem, which is just outside Philly.
But definitely go looking around before making your decision.

Where is Protiviti located in the city? Strongly suggest living outside the city and take the train into town. No parking/driving probelms. Read the paper or take a nap......
City wage tax sucks and is higher if you live IN the city! PA states sales tax is 6%, 7% IN the city! Car insurance can be up to 50% higher IN the city! Unless your work for the city or another outfit that requires you to live IN the city, I would look OUTSIDE the city.
Conshohocken has train into the city, may be less expensive than some of the other burbs, close to Manayunk, the river, King of Prussia, etc.
I commuted into the city for 8 years and loved it. Unfortunately almost all of the large companies - and their IT departements - have left the city so I drive 45 minutes each way every day. What I wouldn't do to be able to take the train to work again!
Good luck in your search!

If u want to be "in" the city (you don't want to be downtown) and want easy access to nite life...manayunk. If you don't want to spend that much.. Conshohocken or Roxborough (in city)
if you're just looking for a nice area to live...drexel hill, havertown, ardmore, bryn mawr (in delaware county, a QUik commute to downtown)...little bit nicer areas, not too pricy.
NO offense to the NE people..but Northeast philly is Crap. I know people from there who would 100% agree with me. Plus, the NE is SOOO far away from Center city..
Comes down to what kind of environment you'd feel more comfortable in (city vs. suburb) , location and price range. if you want some more detailed suggestions, pm me...
I dabble in real estate..
