REGARDING OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY SET AT DECEMBER 18TH,
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF WE COULD DO SECRET SANTA INSTEAD OF THE WHITE ELEPHANT.

ONLY BECAUSE I THINK IT WOULD BE MORE PERSONALIZED TO GIVE A GIFT TO SOMEONE WHO WE CAN GET AN IDEA OF WHAT THEY TRULY LIKE.

WE CAN GET A WISH LIST (WHICH INCLUDES FAVORITE COLOR/HOBBY/INTEREST/ETC..) AND SUBMIT THAT WITH THE NAME AND THEN DRAW FROM THE HAT.

IF I AM UNABLE TO ATTEND THURSDAY'S MEET (11-18-04) PLEASE BRING IT UP.

- Still no one has offered to explain what Secret Santa is and what's the difference from White Elephant -- how can I vote if I don't even know what's what?

secret santa is when you pick a name of a person, keep it a secret and buy them a gift usually with a $$ limit.

white elephant is when you buy a gag gift. I guess you can do it the way above but the way i've participated is that the gag gifts are put in a pile and you choose one. when the next person picks from the pile if they do not like what they got, they can trade it for another gift that someone has already opened.

 

A Secret Santa picks a name randomly, that may or may not include the types of interests of that person you have picked. Each person is not suppose to reveal who they've picked until the day of the gift exchange.
White Elephant is a game where everyone brings a wrapped present. Then those that are playing pick a number out of a hat (or something). The person who picks #1 picks a present first and unwraps it. Then #2 person can choose to take the gift or pick one of the other gifts. The catch is the present can only be traded 3 times and the person who end up with the gift on it's 3rd exchange of hands keeps it.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Thanks for the explanations !! Well, it seems to me that "Secret Santa" would work out only if the people who were going to attend the Xmas party also attended a meeting in which they drew the names - which would consist then of those committed to attend the party. Otherwise you could draw a name, keep it secret, obtain a gift, and that person did not even get to the party. Then what do you do?

It seems that the "White Elephant" idea is more workable. We did gift exchanges like that where I used to work, but they did not call it White Elephant, just a gift ex with a $$ limit so that things did not get out of hand. Since everyone who showed up on the day that the gifts were exchanged brought one gift, it worked out fine.

Does this sound reasonable or do I still have it all back-asswards?

Ron's new idea is everyone who shows, brings a wrapped gift (no more than $20), then each gift gets a number, then each person pulls a # out of a hat and wins the coinciding gift.

 

That wasn't my idea but it was brought up at the MEETING that you weren't at.hehehehe
