1.) The PowerShot S5 does not make use of the many, high quality EF and EF-S lenses in Canon's arsenal.
2.) The Digital Rebel (the DSLR) replicates the manual feature set (and interchangable fixed focus and zoom lenses) found in 35mm film SLR cameras
3.) You'll have far more in-camera adjustments to photos before and after the shot is taken with the DSLR.
NewEgg has a combo deal going until the Oct. 31 for the Canon Digital Rebel XTi / 400D which includes a 60GB External HDD and 1GB CompactFlash card (for photo storage). Ultimately, it all depends on how seriously you want to take photography. For the occasional snapshots and events and gatherings you can afford to settle with a point/shoot digital. The PowerShot S5 looks more than capable, but so are some of the ultra-compacts like the Panasonic DMC-LX2K and comparable Canon models.
PS: Amazon has a good deal on the XTi. $666 for the body + kit lens. $30 less if you get it used.

Because normal digital cameras use a digital recreation to show you what's on the viewfinder and lcd screen, they have to use fixed lenses. There are some ways to stack on lenses but the result is less than spectacular.
Digital SLR's like the Rebel Digital XT & XTi can use interchangeable lenses because they use mechanical operation to actually take the photo.

just another comment on DSLRs, if you think that you are going to be in dusty areas, you may want to reconsider a DSLR; one of the most common ways a DSLR get ruined is by dust on the sensor, that area must be kept very clean.
If you're going to get really serious on photography, you will want to invest in good glass, be it canon or nikon; glass quality makes a huge difference in image quality. Personally, most of my glass is Nikon which works on both my Nikon and Fuji cameras.
Personally I like Fuji and Nikon, unfortunately I don't know much about the Nikon consumer grade cameras (I've only looked at the pro stuff with Nikon).... I do have a Fuji S5200 point and shoot that I use as my tankbag camera when I'm out riding my motorbikes, very durable, withstands vibration well and is capable of shooting in RAW mode so that I don't have to change my workflow from my pro cameras.
A good place online to look for cameras is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ or newegg.com... quite a few online retailers for photo equipment are ripoffs, basically if the price is too good to be true, it is .... there are a LOT of scammers in photo equipment.
