Default ipods/mp3 players..

im looking to buy one can your guys who own them give me some pros and cons to both.

im leaning toward the ipos nano..but am unsure on the variety of music i will ba able to get from itunes....and am wondering if i can get music for it other than from itunes..

i like the versatility of being able ot access more music with a mp3 player but am worried about the security of dowloading form those other music sites...

let me hears some stuff about them.

i have an MP3, not an i-pod though

u can get music from other places like morpheus, lime-wire or areus just to name a few

but remember that i-pod's arent the only thing around so shop arond and i gurantee you can find something better for your money

just my .02 cents

i have an ipod 20gb, imo this is great b/c you can use it as a portable hardrive. The nano is alright but when it came out there seems to be alot of problems with it.
the Pros of the nano are.. that it is small, portable, color, pictures and can hold music/files.
The cons...screen defects, scratches easily b/c of thin clear coat, can be fixed with a sleave of some sort..these are only in some nanos (this is when it just came out.. hopefully all has been fixed) this is all i know about it..

Places to get music...music forums, lime wire, friends, more but cant think of it...and just upload it into the itunes play list, you dont need to buy music directly from itunes if thats what your worried about
hope this helps

Ok, I guess you haven't been in the world of downloading music that long. :D I also have a new 20G ipod, and a 1st gen click wheel that was like 10 gig I think? I don't remember how small they were back then. Anyways... for the money, and for the amount of accessories and ease of use- as well as the ability to integrate it with your home stereo, car stereo or whatever I think it is the best buy. Whichever one you decide to buy, the nano, shuffle, mini, 20-40 Gig, Photo or Video ipod... they are all AWESOME.

You don't just have to get your music from iTunes, although Apple has done an excellent job of making it easy and seamless when transferring music or buying it.

Plus I don't know what year your xB is, but my '06 has an Aux input on the center console, so I can just plug and play without any added accessories needed! Woohoo.

Well Napster has made a come back, and as ptang mentioned there is limewire, and Kazaa, mp3.com, emusic.com, morpheus.com, and many others. Just go to google and search for music downloads.

I have a 15 gig ipod and a sony mp3 player. I like the ipod better because of it's easy to use if you have a mac. Download music from anywhere online or rip your cds, transfer them to itunes and it' real easy to get them on your ipod.

The sony on the other hand is very quirky with my pc, and took forever to syncronize with different music players. If I did it over again I would have bought a Creative Zen instead. Ipod is the way to go for now until other mp3 makers catch up, especially if you have a mac.

Take a look at cnet.com and read some reviews and ratings of different players, lots of great tech stuff. Just my 2c.

Other MP3 players may be cheaper, but NOTHING beats an iPod. It's user interface is better (IMO) than any other MP3 player. It's fast and easy. iTunes and iPod make it easy. Apple breaks it down Barney-style so all you have to do is plug it in and you'll always get the music you see in your iTunes. WYSIWYG. Also, it doesn't matter if you have mac or a PC. It works the same on both. It just looks better sitting next to a mac! ;-)

Flow: Sorry sweetie I wasn't meaning to mock you, but the store. So I hope you didn't take my previous comment the wrong way. Plus since Apple has licensed agreements with the artists who you can purchase/ download the music from on iTunes, they don't support any place you can download music from without having to pay. Goes back to the whole pirating issue years ago especially when they cracked down on Napster and their users.

Since iPod supports MP3's as well as AAC's you can get music from any website that gives you it in that format. Just download and save to your music library ( you can even save to your iTunes library if you have one) and away you go.

I used to work for a company that made home/ office/ wherever MP3 players and we have to do a lot of integration compatibility with iTunes. Actually it's a really nifty item .... the company is called Slim Devices and they have a SLIMP3 as well as a SQUEEZEBOX. They are not portable like the iPod or Zen or others out there... but they do integrate with iTunes and have a open source code. Great for blasting the music on your computer through your home surround sound system- which iPod hasn't really done yet.

when i bought my 06 tc back in the end of october, i also bought an ipod nano to work with the car. for some reason the nano didn't work with the ipod interface with the tc. i heard because the nano is flash based as opposed to a spinning hd. i returned the ipod nano and bought the ipod video. it works perfect with the tc's setup. i don't know if they updated the ipod since then but the ipod nano didn't work. so take it with a grain of salt.

If you own any CD's you can rip them into iTunes and then you can put them on your iPod:

http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/itunes/it1-2.html

And some more help: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/howto/

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes

File format support

iTunes can currently encode to MP3, AIFF, WAV, MPEG-4, AAC, and Apple Lossless, and can convert between any of these formats (by changing the import format in options, right clicking the song and then pressing convert to [format]). It can also play anything QuickTime can play (even some video formats), including Protected AAC files from the iTunes Music Store and Audible.com audio books. In order to play other formats such as the Ogg-contained Vorbis or Speex codecs, iTunes requires the Xiph QuickTime Components to be installed. iTunes currently will not play back HE-AAC/aacPlus audio streams. HE-AAC/aacPlus format files will play back as 22 kHz AAC files (effectively having no high end over 10 kHz).

There has been some criticism of the quality of Apple's MP3 encoder, with regards to variable bit rate encoding. In a January 2004 double-blind public listening test of six MP3 encoders encoding at 128 kbit/s, conducted by Roberto Amorim, the iTunes MP3 VBR encoder came last.[2]

The Windows version of iTunes can automatically convert unprotected WMA files to other audio formats, but it does not support direct playback or encoding of WMA format.

There are lots of forums and other sites so just google if you want more info.
