Navigation System Question
If you're looking for a portable one I think the Garmin Nuvi series wins hands-down. I have a Nuvi 360 (and a C320 before that) and it works great. The 'text-to-speech' function actually says the name of the street to turn onto, rather than just 'turn right ahead'.
Frankly I was a little disappointed by the routing logic in the D3, but it is pretty good 'bang for the buck'. Screen size was more than adequate for nav & entertainment functions. One sucky thing was that I couldn't watch videos from my iPod unless I started from the iPod itself, which was a little cumbersome since the ipod sits locked & out of sight.

I'm not trying to brag, but I have one and I love it. Only thing I don't like is having to keep popping in the dvd with the maps. No big deal, Ialmost always listen to my ipod or the radio anyways. Also I got mine in L.A. for $720 brand new and I was given the remote and ipod cable for an extra 20 bucks
Yes, there is only one CD/DVD slot. There are two map DVDs for North America (West/East Coast). So let's say you've been watching a DVD then you need to get to some destination, you'd have to pop out your DVD then pop in the map DVD, then start the navigation feature to enter your destination. Not a big issue if you don't use the DVD/CD slot. But like I said, the Nav logic in the D3 wasn't that great when compared to my Garmin. Maybe my D3 just didn't like me? We've parted ways and now I'm much happier just using my Garmin Nuvi.
i am thinking about getting the alpine w205 once they release the blackbird pmd-200 that can dock into the w205.
probably be about 1500 total for a portable gps that can dock into the indash screen

any know if the eclipse avn2210p will just plug right into our car without a harness? i remember someone with the other eclipse have it plugged right in and the steering wheel control worked
I have the older Pioneer AVIC D2, it has two slots one for the map DVD and one for music/MP3 CD's. I hear the newer one AVIC D3 has a built in hard drive and will remember the shortcuts or backloads you like to take.
The only issue I have is the Map CD's get outdated very quickly especially in developing areas the updated map dvd’s are $250. The unit seems to be lost more than it is correct, but that is also because I am in Washington and we have weird street names like 521 s 357 Avenue Court East. I think it works better in cali, when I go down to visit it tends to do well.
I have had to go and purchase maps because the nav let me down and the first few months I had it I still would print out mapqwest directions to make sure it was taking me to the correct place. One time it made me take the long way around instead of the driect route to where I wanted to go. The unit wanted me to take a route that was 5 miles longer and basically went in a circle.
The first week I had it, it took me to the address I typed in, but that was not where I needed to be because there are streets with the same name, but different directions and if you leave off the direction you end up somewhere you don't want to be. Anyway not what I expected from a $1,500 nav system but I did get it a year and a half ago and it was on sale $300 off with free install.
