ohh... and one of my former room mates... he does 4wheelin.... some guy broke a control arm on their truck.... 2 batteries, pair or 2 of jumper cables, some welding rods and a wrench (14mm i think) they got the control arm fixed enough to drive home... only truck i know with a wrench for a controll arm

And did all the work myself.. I am no master welder but I think the equipment would easily do the job you are describing and I wouldn't mind teaching you if you would like. Of course, it would be easy and inexpensive to go to a muffler shop.

i'm sure it would be easy to go to a shop, but i'm always down to learn how to do it myself so that way i can say i did it myself & welding is on my list of things to learn - not master, but learn

We had to use that technique a couple years ago on the trail on a control arm bracket. ***Tip*** Take the batteries OUT of the vehicles first! Fried my buddies ECU. But it does work if in a pinch.

and Brian you forgot his to mention his swiss army knife... he had the super delux model.. think it came with the welder, plasma cutter, laser scope, night vision... and a pair of tweezers for taking out splinters...
