Default HID questions

So i finally jumped on and picked up a pair of 4300k HIDs for the scion.

installed them @ work in less than 30mins

I did some searching on the forums, but didn't find anyone w/ the same questions I had so I thought I'd ask here.

My coworker was telling me that I should turn the HIDs on only after turning the car on. Also, make sure to turn them off before shutting off the car. He said this helps the HIDs last longer and doesn't cause a surge to the initial bulb while turning them on.

Now w/ a tC.. when i open the door, my headlights turn off and I've had a pretty bad habit of just not turning them off at night and just opening the door. Is this going to be a problem if I keep doing this? or is it actually ok and he's just telling me some myth..

oh and I got my kit from mobileHID.. and it came w/ this

but i ended up only using the needed HID plug. I supplied the power through my oem cable instead.. is anyone else using MobileHID and doing this?

ok, first off use the wiring harness that came with the kit now!!!

it will keep from putting a strain on your oem harness. When you turn the hid's on it takes a HUGE spike to ignite the bulbs.

Your friend is right about starting the car before you turn the lights on for the same reason you want to use the wiring harness.

As for turning them off before you turn the car off you don't have to, but you don't want them to be on when you restart the car.

One other thing make sure that when you install the wiring harness that the realy is up so you don't get water inside.

Ditto..........use the harness or car will burn down.........turn on lights after car is on and off before turning it off..........and once again do not use them without the harness.......there is a reason it is there........and that is so you do not burn the car to the ground.......

Yep, please use the wire harness, your warranty will be voided if you don't use it.

It's included for a reason. Please use it for safety's sake.

Thanks!

I have mobile HIDs in the XB2, No harness, works great.

The initial spike burns a chunk of power, but the consistent pull in amps is minimal. 1/2 year, no issues, no fire, no death or dismemberment, running a harness is for additional safety and security.

Besides, even with the harness on, and something in your lighting systems goes wrong, good luck getting warranty to cover it with an aftermarket modification and install.

I live dangerously - Harness FREE!

tim, the mobile hid kit comes with the harness, why would you not install it?

Cliff warrantys his stuff, so if you had a problem with the ballast or bulb he will replace it.

I have 2 kits running all the time, with no problems and the harness is super easy to hide, an old modder like you would have it in in 5 minutes.

haha, thanks for the feedback guys.. looks like the majority agree with having a harness.

I'm like MiniGuy though.. i like to live dangerously too. i guess tomorrow morn i can rewire it w/ the harness =\

the wattage for the HIDs are only 35 though.. aren't the normal halogens 55?! sooo wouldnt it be ok? or is this surge at the start just that bad for them.

plus.. are any of you using additional aluminum shields with your HIDs? the spread w/ the stock housing isn't amazing.. but im looking to reduce the scatter and open to suggestions that don't include retrofitting. =)

what burns harness to car up is the spike.....it is too many amps for the stock harness guage wire......and without the relay to separate the load it is transfered to the stock loom.......over time the loom will get hot and brittle and brittle plastic makes bare wires.....and then boom fire.

LIve dangerously is a bad way to live........if needed I will come wire it in and you will not see it at all........mine is all hidden in my bay and cannot be seen cept the 2 wires at my battery side terminals.

^Fuse before Fire! I'll check my wires... 10 bucks says they're good as new... - Caution is always a good way to go though. better safe than me.

And even a really huge unfused short just makes lots of smoke and little fire in my experience. I shorted out the main power lead on the Mini from the rear battery underneath the car to the engine bay (It hit the exhaust pipe when a bracket came loose... that was cool.... SMOKEY TRUNK AND CABIN in seconds... and no fuse to stop it...

Best temporary fix ever with duct taping a half of a jumper cable on the top of my roof and running it from the battery in the trunk to the main lead hookup in the engine bay.

alright.. soo i just got the harness wired in just fine.. after testing it for the first time w/ the harness in.. i found there is a ringing sound coming from the fuse or relay area... is this normal??

in additon.. while plugging in the red power to the battery.. some reddish fluid has come out from the top of the power section.. maybe like a dime size..?
