Steam locomotives double-heading for first time ever on public excursion
The Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation has announced that the Union Pacific #844 and Southern Pacific #4449 will be double-heading for the first time on a public excursion roundtrip from Tacoma to Everett, Wash. on Saturday, May 19. Spectators are encouraged to view this unique train event along the BNSF railway as the trains pass through Auburn, Kent, Seattle, Edmonds and finally arrive at the Amtrak/Sound Transit station in Everett.
The trains will leave from Tacoma at 10 a.m. and finally arrive at the Amtrak/Sound Transit station in Everett at approximately 12 p.m. The train will return to Tacoma via the same routing at 2 p.m., arriving at the Tacoma Amtrak Station at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Attempts will be made to have a photo run-by in each direction. However, the route the train follows is double-tracked and is one of the most heavily used sections of railroad in the Pacific Northwest. Railroad operations will determine the potential for any stops consistent with the safety of the passengers.
This steam special is being operated by the Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway on behalf of the Barriger Library of the University of Missouri at St. Louis, and the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation.
