Default Moving to Portland

I am moving to Portland at the end of January, and am not sure what part of the metro area to live. Ultimately it will depend on where I get a job, but any suggestions would help. I just don't want to move down there and run into problems. I would like to live in a nicer area, but am also looking for cheaper rent. So basically somewhere average. What are some good neighborhoods, and where should I avoid?

Congrats on the move to the PNW!

I'm in no way knowledgeable about Oregon so good luck on the move and we'll be seeing more of you around here, yay!

Do you know what type of work or what company you plan to work for? That might help narrow it down.

There are several nice suburbs of Portland (PDX) and I'm sure that the locals will chime in about what areas are best.

WELCOME!!! WELCOME!!!

I'm an electronic technician, so I'll be looking for a job with an electronic manufacturing company. Where are most of the industrial areas located? I see most job postings are around Beaverton.

Yes, most of the Tech stuff is on the West side. Beaverton, Hillsboro etc. Cheap rent on the other hand is more likely to be found in SE or NE but the commute would drive you insane. Let me know where you are looking and I can give you some background. I was born here in Portland and know quite a bit about he history and character of most of the towns.

Agree with the thought of nicer. All my family and friends are asking me "why do you want to live where it rains all the time?". My response, "Why do you want to live here where everything is brown and dead?"

Welcome!!!

I go down to Portland/Beaverton for work every now and then.... The traffic is horrible. There may be some back roads but I only go down there 3-4 times a year for work and have been there for a few events so not worth learning.

Maybe someone has a temporary place you can crash for a few days until you figure it all out.

Good luck and hope to see you at some of the local events!!!

Find somewhere cheap until you know where you will be working. Commuting from one side of town to the other sucks! It is always nice to live east of where you work too so you won't be driving into the sun coming/going from work.

Yeah, I was thinking of just finding something cheap that offers a short term lease. That way I can move when I figure things out. I won't have too much to move, considering I am only taking what I can fit in my car. I love the cargo room in these cars

move to vancouver... if you work in vancouver you dont have to pay state tax on your paychecks and then you can just jump on i-5 and cross the bridge to be in portland and then you dont got to pay sales tax on anything either... plus my brother just quit his job at a decent electrical engineering place... i'll ask him what the name was... i wanna say controltech...

I was considering Vancouver, seemed rent was usually a little cheaper. Sales tax doesn't really concern me, I'd be more interested in the difference in state income tax.

if you live and work in washington you dont have to pay state tax on your checks... its because we have sales tax... and like was i mentioned before... if you live in vantucky you can just shop in oregon... its a win win. thats why i keep coming back.

Problem is if you get a job in Portland you will still have to pay Oregon income tax even if you live in Vancouver.

Light-Rail is your best friend. I can't wait until they extend MAX to Vancouver, WA... park the car at the station in Downtown Vancouver, hop the yellow line and have no more worries about traffic.

:D

haha, well I never had anything happen to my car the past 30 times I've parked it when traffic was bad and hit the bus up over to the Max station. Thanks for that heads up though O.O
