questions about LSD (drivetrain... not drugs) *UPDATE*
so i am in the middle of doing a LSD install for someone (they shall remained unnamed at this time) and i have come upon a minor infarction. there is a special tool required (i believe) to remove the 3rd gear clutch/synchro pack so that you can split the case. this brings me to my question...
1) who else in the PNW is planning on getting the LSD in the tC/2nd gen xB?
2) if you do would you have me install it for a grossly reduced rate over the dealership or local tuner shop?
3) are there enough of you to make buying this worth my while or am i just going to have to butter up a dealership/trans shop to let me borrow one?
let me know
if there are enough people i might even consider getting a loaner tranny from a wrecking yard so that people dont have to not drive there cars for the weeks this seems to be taking.

man do i wish it was that easy... or just use the 48 inch pry bar... yeah that will do it... who needs teeth on the tranny gears anywho right? nah for real though if anyone else is even thinking about this let me know or ill just call the tranny shops that we deal with through work tomorrow and locate one i can borrow.
Hey eric-
call Discount Imports, (503) 659-7444, ask for Scott, I believe its extension 106 (there is a directory of extensions) tell him Janesa told u to call he can probably help u out, he had the LSD on his tC before he sold it and he may even be able to get the tool cheaper for you, or at least tell u what it is and where to get it. and if he has it I can always pick it up and meet u somewhere, I live across the street from the store and since u are newer to the area u could get lost

lol IM newer to the area, Erik was raised here and only moved up to the Seattle area under 3 years ago to live with me haha.
I'll make sure he logs on and reads this thank you Janesa! We talked to Rado and his shop foreman in California about it since they're the ones that built the one in our car but I guess they couldn't help out since they're a little far away

so to keep this thread alive i would like to add that this is still going on... and i would like to make a few statements about this project.
1) after many attempts of scionlife trying to make this WAY harder than it is i am prevailing.
2) i WILL do a DIY on this if there is another person wanting this done.
3) i strongly urge anyone who has some mechanical apptitude to DO THIS YOURSELF.
and finally
4) SCIONLIFE YOU = FAIL. reasons
a) the "special tool that i needed from toyota" to get the 3rd gear off was a STANDARD OFF THE SHELF PULLEY PULLER.
b) the "20 ton hydraulic press" that i would need to swap the ring gear over was a RUBBER MALLET.
c) about the only thing that i have to say that was positive is that someone chimed in at one point and recommended a new speedo drive gear... i highly recommend this... saves mucho time.
d) the differential shims that you have to order from TRD. uhh... what shims? i found no shims and found the size of the Quaife diff to be exactly equal to that of the stock diff so i dont know what the hell THEY were talking about...
about the only thing i can honestly say is that scion life actually hindered me in this build... i spent so much time being intimidated by other peoples experience with this that i put it off and put it off and in 20 minutes i seperated the case and had the differential out on the bench... in 15 more i was done swapping ring gears and checking back lash and now i am gonna wait till tommorrow then im putting it the rest of the way back together...
special thanks to raamaudio rick. where ever you are your statement about making your own 3rd gear puller out of some bolts and a piece of metal inspired me to stop listening to the forums and just go with what i feel will work. thank you again. more to come...
oh and ps... anyone thinking of having this done hit me up... i will strongly discount the install so that i can do the DIY with your tranny.

LSD = limited slip differential... when one wheel slips it transfer power equally across the axle so that you maintain control of the vehicle... where as open differential (what all scions come with stock) transfers power to the path of least resistance... if you start to spin a tire it transfers more power to the spinning tire... which is very counter productive.
I was wondering what on earth special tool it could use too cause looking at the diagram breakdown it looked like it was puller was all that was needed......good to hear you got it out and back together......now wish the Auto tranny would allow me to install one......we originally ordered it stock with it and did not notice till almost a year later that we were never charged for it,cause it canot be put in it.......lol.
Hey Brian
Erik was doing this job as a huge favor to me for a friend of mine that's deployed and we have to get it back in his car pretty quick before he gets home form his deployment his car and his house (and of course his wifee) are up in Bremerton
Erik was saying he could use an extra set of hands when he goes up to put it in and if you are available it would be fun to hang out, I know Bremerton is a ways away but lemme know Smile
We don't have a date for you yet, should be some time in June that's all I know for now
