since i'll have a lot of time this summer to finally build my trunk setup, I'm wondering what would be more impressive visually:

2 inverted Boston Acoustics G5 12" with 2 Passive Radiators


or


4 ElementalDesigns e3.8 8inch subs, 2 on the left, 2 on the right and 2 amps in between, all in a false floor setup.




either choice will have 4 visible speakers

4 8's - no one hasn't done this in a long time & we already know how 8's sound in your car

I'm torn 50/50. either way I'll have 4 visible speakers. the 12s would have way more SPL but at a cost of 70lbs to the speakers alone. The 8s weigh only 10lbs, 40lbs total and would make my car handle better.

Honestly I am torn........I would love to hear 4 8s but the Bostons are crazy loud.

 

Do the 8's and then sell me tha 12's....its a win-win!!
Although a friend of mine had either 6 or 8 8's in his Jetta..Then he put em in his Audi...

 

I would say 4 8's. But would rather see 6 to 8 6.5's

yeah, i was curious the other day and put one G5 in my 1.8cuft vented enclosure tuned to 30hz and I fell in love with it again. super clean, no distortion, and super friggin loud. its almost as loud as both the g5s and the PRs combined.

^ unfortunately 4" subwoofers that sound good in a car environment are not common and hard to find

 

so i listened to my dual 8s today and liked the tonality and how easily it blended with all the other speakers. My ears would probably love me better if I got the 8s because the 12s would probably cause premature hearing loss.

Yes, but do you listen at the volumes I listen to? do your ears hurt when you get home from work? lol

 

so i'm leaning towards the 8s now. problem now is choosing a model. Constraints are must be at least 200 watts rms and budget of $400 max but cheaper the better

I'm currently looking at:

Kicker CVR - i've owned 2 8s in he past. can get loud and very punchy but not very SQ oriented, $55 each on ebay

Rockford Fosgate Punch P2 - Can get loud, slightly better SQ than the CVRs, $69 each

Polk MM840 - have not heard yet but specs are impressive - 20mm of Xmax! $99 each

Elemental Designs e3.8 - currently own the previous model which should sound the same according to E.D., Great SQ, decently loud. $80
