I bet the whole car wouldn't need to be light colored to pass, just the horizontal surfaces. Isn't that why the FJ Cruiser has a white roof? Who knows, maybe this will lead the auto manufacturers to start offering factory two-tone paint jobs. That would actually be kinda cool. As for the rest of the US, I doubt this will affect our color selection.

Repaint would be stupid. The excess CO2 and other gasses a dark color car release to run the A/C to get temps to light car levels have to be less than all the VOC's and other nasty crap that would be released during a re-paint.

Smarter would be to build an intake / exhaust vent into the car somewhere to keep the cabin cool when the car is parked. A small fan won't use much electricity and you could put a timing device on it so it would only run x minutes / hours between engine starts to keep from killing the battery. Also, a temp sensor could be built in to only cut it on above a certain cabin temp.

They gotta have something to do might as well find something like "black cars" that raises heat coming down to pick on. You would think they would have found a way to try to live on the moon or mars rather than this topic.

No idea if anyone has said this yet, but obviously if this went through it would only be for NEW CARS. Not current cars

Either way, I can't believe tax dollars are going towards this crap! Who the fk cares if blank paint supposedly has something to do with emissions? God.. this state is so fked up its irritating.

Chelsea does have a point, its for new cars. But even so, this is just weak. My mom has a white van and its hot as hell in there during the summer. That article is so narrow minded. Many factors like leather interior, dark interior colors, etc. also affect how hot the car gets too.

Thank you CA researchers and corrupt officals.

Don't forget glass. I think the greenhouse effect is more the cause than the paint. Ban the tC and it's big ___ rear window, xB's for everyone

Or, if they were that concerned, just get a tint that's IR reflective and the problem should be better. Plus, cops could hit you with laser easier, it's win / win for them.

Yes... but how hot does it get where you live in the summer? Last summer it was horrible, even with the windows down. 'Sides, isn't it horribly humid on the East Coast anyways? lol

WHY DON'T THEY STUDY HOW TINT REFLECTS UV RAYS AND HEAT AND CAN ALSO REDUCE EMISSIONS.

I know the ARB thinks they're some sort of hand of god but this goes to show that if we all freak out and start pointing fingers at them they with run away with their tail between their legs.

Thanks for the link, I read the article. I found it very interesting that CARB claims transportation causes 38% of all air emmissions. The national statistics from the EPA are only 30%, and this includes large trucks, buses, nonroad recreational vehicles (e.g., dirt bikes and snowmobiles), farm and construction equipment,
lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, aircraft, and locomotives.

I'm wondering what the true percentage is for the private vehicles they were studying to target. Also, they are looking at making glass more reflective. What's that going to do in terms of road safety with sun glare from oncoming traffic. I really wish they would study cumulative effects, and go after the worst problems first, not the ones that are easiest for them to regulate.

East Coast humidity sucks. It's bad here in the mid-atlantic but even worse further south on the coast.

on the subject of reflective glass why not just utilize polarizing technology in a window?
