Coming to Cali
It kind of depends on what you want to do at the beach. Venice is great for people watching---but there are beaches for surfing etc. There is always Surf City--Huntington Beach.
OC grand tour Hit up Surf City, down to Newport Beach [if you get there EARLY you might get a good shot of the dory fleet literally hitting the beach in their fishing boats, see the Newport fun zone, ride the ferry to Balboa Island and back, head down to the Balboa pier for lunch at Ruby's at the end of the pier. after lunch check out "the Wedge" it is on the West side of the entrance to Newport Harbor the body surfers do need to be DUG out occasionally, when it is up it is UP

i would DEFINITELY recommend Laguna beach, you get a great beach with tide pools, plus art galleries and restraunts; other beaches that i'd recommend are Newport and Huntington, hope this helps a bit =)
i second this..... laguna nice area for simple relaxed beaches... but if u surf... like everyone else said.... huntington beach for surf....
