does anyone know for sure?
is autostart on a manual transmission against the law in southern california..this can be the difference of me having to pay hundreds to nothing at all...
as far as I know its originally created and tested by the US military, and is 100% street legal.
On a manual transmission since, I want to say the 80's there's been whats called "safety clutch" where you must fully engage the clutch to start the car, this must be bypassed for use with a remote start.
About all the info I know on it without doing some research

really depends, i know in some states it is actually illegal for an unoccupied vehicle to be left running, but i've never seen or heard about it being enforced.
i remember i'd leave my explorer idling in the parking lot before i'd leave work because i could lock the keys in, and then open it with me 5 digit security code on the keypad.
but yeah, with a manual tranmission, your going to have to make sure you leave your car in neutral when you park, and have alot of faith in your parking brake. and yeah, you need a neutral bypass so the engine will start.
but be careful because doing all this will make your tc extremely easy to steal.

yeah it can be done and as draxcaliber said, it will make the car easier to steal cause all they have to do is break your ignition and it will becomes easy for them to start the car up and just take off quickly, no i'm a not theft but i work installing car alarms and other security devices.
I'm pretty sure he's asking because the body shop he took his car to got into an accident with his car and their insurance isn't covering it. That's why he's asking if it's legal or not so that he can take them to court.
the remote start is at your own risk and the installer should of told you about it not being safe for a manual cause things like that always happen. a friend of mine took his mustang to a car wash and the guy saw the button and wanted to check it out, of course the car was in 1st gear and when he started the car it just took off rolling and crashed into some bushes. the car wash had to pay for the damages so if the bodyshop did that then they should atleast say hey we're gonna fix it, but find a new shop to take the car from now on.

I have a remote start on my car, its a manual, I've had one bad experience since I got it, I went to go get an alignment, drop it off, came back and picked up the car, started it up with the remote and it started jerking forward, I reacted quickly, but it already had hit this wooden fence in front of it, luckily there was no damage, my bumper is not painted yet, so no harm no foul, no one saw what happened, thank god...that would have been inversing, he he

I have the 791xv in mine, I have it hooked up to utilize the "turbo timer" portion of the alarm, however I refrained from putting in the actual remote start portion, though it doesn't take much more.
i just checked the california website under the vehicle laws and regulations, and there is no law against it. However, your insurance may not allow it or void your insurance if they know about it...but it's not against the law in cali
it is not illegal but it is also not recommended for a manual transmission due to problems like this one, alot of shops have you sign the paper saying that they are not liable for things that occur once the car has left the shop. it is at your own risk and use of the product. but lets say the remote start stops working, well you take the reciept back with you to the shop and show them and they'll take care of you. that is how it works out and you should know this already.
