thanks for the offer, but i've got a long ways to go before I can have something portfolio ready haha, like buying a series of L lenses and a full strobe set up but I'll keep you in mind when I feel I have something worthwhile for portfolio.

On the plus side I think I may have found a professional make up artist that would agree to work with me on future projects, thats a good step ^^

my workflow
manual exposure + flash
Using Raw files, I use CS3 raw editor
tweak with curves and levels to fine tune black levels
add vignette if I feel that it would help the mood of the photo.
I dont shoot in jpeg straight from the camera.
You can't get images like the ones I posted with straight camera jpeg, the color and black level information is lost in the compression.
Camera used is a 50d with the 430ex and stofen for fill
lens used for 90 percent of the photos was the el cheapo 18-55 is f 3.5 kit lens and sunpak polarizer I think almost all were taken at 18mm focal with a 1.6 crop frame.
the drag photos were taken with a 70-300 is usm f4 + lens hood at various focal lengths and B+W UV filter on a monopod, aperture and shutter speed was changed manually on the fly depending on the focal length I used at the time. No flash was used for the drag strip.

the car show shots were taken at narrow aperture whilst using fill flash spun all over the place with the 430 ex + stofen. adjusting shutter speed and iso depending on how dynamic I wanted the lighting.

50 1.8 was used on portraiture and some close up car shots like decal and paint work. Flash was used on the portraits.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Thanks for the detailed explanation but I got lost as soon as you said "manual exposure" and died when you said "RAW". ha j/k Seriously, thanks for taking the time to explain what and how you get your photos looking so good. It says a lot about you as a person.

I think the M on your shots should mean "Master" and you should change your username to RtB for "Raising The Bar".

I think you're giving me too much credit haha.
I've seen quite a few car pictures on the forum that are excellent. So the bar does not necessarily need to be raised. :D

However I do appreciate your encouraging comments.

Id highly recommend using manual exposure if you don't already.
Personally I believe the photographer will have better judgement with exposure than the camera.

AV TV modes will fail me much more than me just setting the modes manually
Even the exposure meter in manual will fail you, so I dont rely on its reading either.

Ill check later, but I dont think I have any more pics of that one, you may want to look through the other irwindale photo threads, you may find more of this car in one of those.

the wheels were so baller, I had to stop and take a picture of it.

I didnt really take many multiple shots on any single car, I was there just for fun, so I just took photos that I thought would be fun for me to take.
