Default Roadside inspections in Long Beach today?

So I was driving into work today down Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach and saw this thing set up off of Ocean & Temple. It looked like a DUI checkpoint, however they had elevated ramps for the cars to drive up, and once up on there they would pop the hood and inspect.

I have nooooo idea how they decided who to pull over, but i saw some old **** lady with a stock corrolla getting hassled and they were looking under her hood. When I bailed for lunch I drove by again and saw they had an Eclipse up there, looking under the hood. They had a portable trailer and computers set up.

Instead of chancing it on my way back to the office, i drove down 1st instead...i dont have a front license plate mounted and i do have a CAI...so i just thought it was better to be safe than sorry since i am not sure of what the heck was going on.

Can anyone shed some light on this, or have you see something similar?

those are mobile smog checks.

if you get caught i think they pay YOU something like 500 to get it fixed or 1000 to crush your car.

i cant seem to find the article on it though.. maybe someone will find it and post it..

actually here it is..

I don't think they'd pull over a recent car though. Or would they? I've seen one around UCI in the summer and they were catching older cars and letting the newer ones slide by.

mmm I would disagree. They see our cars, especially they heavily modded ones and all we do is attract attention. It sucks, I hope there is never one around my house, or else I will be screwed.

WTF!!!! $500 fix it ticket or $1000 or crush my car? I think I might move out the California and never return if they crushed my car over a damn CAI/header/Exhaust. A big F/U and goodbye.

Sorry to say but I am not a drug dealer and don't need to be screwed for wanting a bit more HP from my what 85hp xA?

^^ You misunderstood. California PAYS YOU $500 to make repairs or $1,000 if you choose to scrap the vehicle.

Just buy a $300 junker and scrap it for a cool $700 profit. heh...

If the car is a gross polluter, one that emits 100 to 500 times as much as an average car, a kind of invitation is mailed to the car's owner.

And the deal might be tempting. Car owners can receive up to $500 to make repairs, or $1,000 to scrap the vehicle.

If they earn a low income and are willing to replace their car with a low-emission used car, they can get $2,000.

LOL buy a $500 car, get $1000 when you crush it, and pocket $500.

EDIT: oh wait someone already said that.
