Default Visiting San Diego in May...

Hey fellow SLers. On May 14, after 3 1/2 long months at sea, I'll be sailing into San Diego before flying home to Seattle. I'm making travel plans right now, and have decided to set aside the 15th and maybe the 16th to do stuff in SD or nearby areas, as I have never visited CA.

Any ideas on things to do? The San Diego Zoo looks promising. I'll be turning 21 at sea, so my first US bar/pub experience might be a possibility.

There's the Zoo, the larger Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld. As for the night scene... umm I've been 21 for a while, but I never do that stuff, maybe one of the squids could fill ya in. :D Oh and if you like artsy stuff or museums go around Balboa Park or see an IMAX film at the Fleet Center.

If you plan on partying it up.....stay in the Gas Lamp district. Then you wont have to worry about drinking and driving. Its also fairly close to balboa park and all the Museums. The Gas lamp has all kinds of night life and great restaurants. Cafe Sevilla is one of my favorites!

6 days away from the continental United States! Looks like the ship will be pulling into the cruise ship terminal at the harbor (a few blocks from "Balboa Park" and some military installations, it seems). I'll be staying at a hotel in the area. What's fun within walking distance, and how far away is the zoo?

Or, anyone SLers wanna hang out on the 15th?

Sorry, I'd do research on my own but my satellite internet minutes are limited and expensive.

i'd love to hang out but i've been busy busy busy. always good to show people around the area. i'm pretty sure ryan told you about the Gaslamp in Downtown. from the cruise terminal, it's about 15-20 minutes walking distance. i'm not 21 but i plan on just partying at the clubs (i hate alchohol). the zoo is just another zoo unless you go to the wild animal park which is on the opposite side of the county. balboa park is just an artsy kick-back kinda place. really cool. stick to downtown for the night scene though. either downtown or Pacific Beach (north of downtown)

If you've only got two days in SD I'd say everyone else is right about hitting up the Gaslamp; since you're new to drinking (legally) you'll be able to experience a decent variety of bars/clubs. San Diego has a trolley system too but it won't really take you anywhere other than the US-Mexico border, downtown, a few of the malls in Mission Valley or suburbia.

After 3 months at sea you'll love the food around here. There's a touristy area called Old Town that has some good Mexican places to eat at (and a few tequila bars too). Oh and as for the museums in Balboa Park you can probably get in to a few of them for free as every Tuesday there's a handful of museums that are free to the general public (but sometimes only to SoCal residents).

Yeah, when I visit San Diego, I went to Old Town... they had a tour that runs every half hour or so (i believe it was about $30 each person)... you sit on the old trolley and they take you around the city, telling you about its history and hot spots. That would be a good starting point.. then u'll get an idea on where to go afterwards.
