Default Hello Rockies Scionlife!

My name is Evan. I bought a bop xb from go. I have always wanted this car. Since the bB showed up in automobile. I sat in one at the auto-show of denver in 01'. I knew it was the car for me.

I stand 6'8''. The only problem with the car is the rear hatch.

Solution: I searched for changing the location of hinges on doors, and found scissors and suicide, But nothing for tunring the hatch into a right-to-left door.

My car knowledge ends at basic. Anyone got suggestions of learning topics to get me started on this?

And Hello!

Glad to have you with us!
The xB seems to be a good choice for us people of height. Glad you found a car you fit in that gets more then 12 Miles to the gallon.
I don't think that the rear side pillars can support the weight of the door. But I could be wrong and often am.

Congrats Evan!!!

That being said that rear hatch mod would be rather a unique mod. You would need to relocate the hinges to the side and custom fab some brackets to hold the door with out tweaking the frame around the window. I would say to do it properly with two hinges equally spaced to balance the weightyou have some work ahead of you . To over come the weight distribution you would have to either reinforce the frame around the glass or work the tailight into a permanent attachment to the rear hatch to create a stable door that wont tweak due to the weight

yeah, congrats evan! welcome!

I have not seen a side hatch xb, and I think that would be one badass mod! i think it would be a fairly heavy undertaking, with a lot of planning (not to mention bodywork)
i would probably initially lean toward working on the lower part of the hatch and the taillight area.

There's one guy on here, smartass, that has done some mods that others said could not be done, namely rear suicides. if anyone would know what it would take, it would be him. there's also a hot-rod fabricator here in town named mike, and he's done some pretty wicked things with metal and doors. he might be the go-to guy after you figure out the particulars.

(PS glad you're not going to be shy about asking us for tips on mods, because between the core group of us that frequent this region, we've probably seen or done every mod that's out there for the first-gen xB. you can let our (or at least mine, i know i've made a few!) mistakes be your guide!)

Well sweet thanks for the support. I am going to need it.
Maybe folding down would be more of a feasable Idea. At that point I would need to split the door in two. I gave this more thought while at work and came up with Half a hatch at a higher peak angle and a Drawer. I know theres been a Drawer cause I remember falling in love with it. The DJ xb....

The weight specs on this one would definately be more than I need. But that looks about right. Those speakers out the passenger doors are hot too.

I also remember from my childhood rides in a station wagon, a Rear tail gate that folded down, AND swung out to the side. [/img]

a split hatch idea has also been tosd around, but I don't know that anyone's done it - that would be even more work then the swing imo.

as per the other thread(Thanks cherrybox and lowdownxb) it looks as though he's removed the tail lights and all the doors and windows...sheesh. solved that problem. quite effectively.

It looks as though the drawer might be better. especially with whats goin in the trunk, more on that latter.
