If there is knock probably retard the timing first.

Also check the Water Temps & EGT if they are available. The more sensors, you have, the easier it is to tune it lol. There not all necessary, but its makes it a lot easier, from what i've been reading.

what does water temperature and egt have to do with motor knock??? if temps are to high chances are your running very lean... and chances are your thermostat is about to go if ur car cant keep its cool and the readings are all over the place.

motor knock means your timing is to advanced and it needs to be retarded... //

whats the negative on having knock?

also.. when would someone want to advance timing instead of retarding it?

It has nothing to do with engine knock. I was just saying that, because if they are knocking then they'll have to retard the timing. Therefore if they retard it too much they'll see an increase in temps. Assuming the AFR is already fine.

The car doesn't have to necesarily be running lean for the temps to go up. You can have a safe AFR and still induce really high engine temperatures, by retarding timing too much.

I think that would be a better question for pete. All I know, is knock is bad, and its the sound of an engine rebuild, lol.

You advance timing to make power, basically. But advance too much and you get knock. Retard to much, and you get high engine temperatures. To counteract the high engine temps, tuners usually add fuel. Thats why its a fine line, betweeen the two. Gotta play around with it.

One of the side effects of too much timing (knock), you can blow a head gasket, from what i've read. Not from personal experience . I'm sure there are a bunch of other parts/components/internals, that can mess up. But in general knock is scary lol.

N/A cars usually require advancing the timing.

Turbo cars usually have to retard timing a lot to prevent knock.

in internal combustion engines occurs when combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder starts off correctly in response to ignition by the spark plug, but one or more pockets of air/fuel mixture explode outside the envelope of the normal combustion front. In non-diesel combustion engines, the fuel-air charge is designed to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise time in the piston's stroke cycle designed for the engine. When Detonation (Knocking) occurs two or more combustion fronts will exist and their resultant collisions produce a sudden rise in cylinder pressure and a shock-wave which will reverberate around the cylinder[1]. The peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The resulting shock-wave reverberates in the combustion chamber, creating the characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and pressure increases catastrophically. It can range from hardly noticeable to complete engine destruction or plain and simple blow the fks up...

retard timing when u hear the ping... and also retard timing for boost apps..

advanced timing is for NA apps.. but in instance to much advanced timing will cause knock also in which timing must be taken away aswell...

Who wants a ride in my car tonight?
I haven't had time to try the windows vista fix yet. So it'll probably still be running pig rich tonight. Too bad I can't shift into 5th yet

I also need to fix the alignment and change the tires, since I noticed the other day when I changed the brake lines, that the tread is wearing out unevenly.

Fineeeeeeeeeeeeee. lol.
Well hopefully I can have it street tuned by friday.
Maybe then, you'll want a ride.

Unless you mean when I have my other tranny and flywheel installed, and dynotuned
Which will probably be next month.

After i'm done with that install, i'll get a cd-player, suspension, lip kit, spoiler, and then i'll finally be done...... for a while.
