Anyone Live In Port Charlotte...?
I currently live in Philadelphia with my girlfriend, and her parents live in Cape Coral. Her dad owns alot of land in and around Port Charlotte. He told us instead of buying a house in Folcroft, Pa that he would give us a lot to put a new house on. So ive been thinking long and hard about it. It seems like a great oppurtunity but I would be leaving my family and friends behind. That is the only thing stopping me.
So I was wondering if anyone could offer up any insight in to the area? Anyone ever dealt with Holiday Builders? Good Neighborhood? The lot would be on either Halle Barry st, rd, dr whatever, or Chevy Chase. Is that an Ok part of town?
Living here I am about to buy a row home in a semi-ok neighborhood for $115,000 off of her dad. The house is just about worth $115,000 no more. If i build a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house down there for $170-$180k and have it be worth more(atleast i think).
I can't make my mind up either way. Any help would be great.
thanks
Mint

I knew some people in Port Charlotte about 20 years ago and I've heard it hasn't changed much. young people hated it because there's nothing to do. if you're older or if you like a quiet laid-back life in a warm climate close to the water, then it is very nice. A lot of northerners move to florida, some luv it but many of them turn around and move back. depends on your tastes, it's much different than PA.
If you're getting a free lot then surely you'll make money on the deal. The housing boom has peaked and it may take a few years before prices start going up again.

Thanks for the posts. I think im getting closer and closer to agreeing. If the major negative is older people or the laid-back life then im all for it. Plus me and my gf have been together 5+ yrs. so Im sure kids are on the way sooner or later. I would much rather put them through school down there then anywhere around here.
Plus If there is no real cold winter down there I can keep the xB clean and shinny all year long!
