Default North Miami area short shifter install help

so i tried to do it myself but have run into a few problems. I bought a Doc I short shifter plus package with the cage bushing risers. i've followed the tutorials here on SL and everything was going smoothly until i got to the damn black washer on the side of the cage. some people have said, "oh i popped it off in 2 minutes with a screwdriver." some say, "use a dremel and it will be off in a second." others were more realistic saying it took them 1.5 hours. well dammit, i've been working on that stupid washer for saturday night and all of sunday morning!!!! the old tutorials show that the washer used to be plastic......well now they are metal.

i was just wondering if there was anyone in the miami area willing to help me out with getting this shifter in. anyone have a dremel? any other tips just using a screw driver?? i have chewed up half of the cage and the washer is pushed up some.

i'm a college student and kind of want this done ASAP so that i can acutally drive to school luckily i have no tests this week but a quiz on tuesday so any help will be appreciated. for now i have put back the skeleton of the stock shifter back together so that i can drive around.

below are some pix of my install problems. crappy camera phone was all i had so pardon the resolution.

Here is my messed up assembly by the black washer. 5 hours and couting and the damn thing still won't come off.

Here is my experience with my install...

I bought the creative compacts, and that kit came with extra black washers...I didnt realize that at first which is why it took me so long but after I found out I had extras I just pryed that oem washer a lil and got a cutter plier in there and just started cutting away at it, lol....

yah i already decided i wasn't going to keep the washer. i guess i'll invest in some metal cutting pliers. just thought from reading all the DIY threads that i could merely pop it off.

thanks for the tips. ya i already checked out doc I's website and the other tutorials on SL. the dremel seems the way to go but i thought i could lift the washer off using manual tools. o well, lesson learned. i was trying to save money from buying a dremel. i'm going to the hardware store to buy some metal clippers and snip that lil bastard off. the roughed up cage housing won't affect anything so it was worth a try on my part.

you dont to buy a dremel, a small 5 bucks metal saw would do it.. and just remove the whole cage and have plenty of room to do it, it shouldnt be that hard.
