they should not have been racing, period. granted the guy should had on lights, but to blame him/her for coming up behind them is crazy. obviously it's a road that people use regularly if the trator-trailer came up also.
I'm not gonna get into the whole thing.. I will say these two things..
1. Yes I blame that guy.. obviously his fault
2. There is more video of cars veering into crowds at sanctioned track events, than there are at street races. Its a racing accident, plain and simple.
these people accept the same risk at either, and this is the result of that risk, at either venue, I just dont want this defined by where it took place. The semi truck got involved in the after cluter, the guys actually racing didn't lose control, this guy involving himself, did. We all make stupid moves on the road, racing or not, when we make it, it's a story, when people die its tragic. These racing meets, taking place at night are dangerous as hell, I agree, and shouldnt take place. I stopped going in 1993, when this exact thing happened.. noone died but, two guys were racing.. a much faster car launched behind them, when the race was over , the guys racing hit the brakes, the guy that tailed them didn't, hit them, then plowed into 3 cars, pushing them into the canal (these were people watching on the side). I'm not crazy for blaming this guy, I KNOW it was his fault. I may be wrong in asumming he was trying to show off, but lights off, and going fast enough to do what he did, sure sounds like a kid move to me. Either that or he was wasted..Of course the fact that this happened on the street and racers were there, will over shadow all of it, as usuall..

update to that story from another thread on SL. sounds like it was the bystanders fault. even if he had his light on that may have not seen them through the smoke.

According to police, two cars had lined up for a race on the smooth and relatively flat and straight stretch of highway. They spun their wheels, kicking up smoke, then sped off, Copeland said.
The crowd then moved into the road to watch the cars drive away. The combination of the smoke and the dark morning likely meant the driver of the approaching white sedan could not see the crowd. No charges were pending.

I agree... updated news shows, the bystanders entered the smokey highway.. I still dont understand how that car decided that this wasnt odd, and kept going.. I wonder what town this was.. they say a 60 something year old man was there with his grand kids watching the race.. crazy situation.. I change my stand to, all were at fault..

if the smoke hadn't cleared then he could see, also remember it was at 3 or 4 in the a.m. so it was dark. i don't blame the driver at all, i do wonder if and why he didn't have on lights though. but in the end it wasn't really on him, people don't belong in the middle of the road.
