Default Lexus and Toyota in Top Four Initial Quality

JD Powers will be releasing their 2006 Initial Quality Study today. The study measures quality after 90 days of ownership. Owners rate their vehicles on 135 attributes.

1. Lexus (1 last year)
2. Porsche (35 last year)
3. Hyundai (11 last year)
4. Toyota (7 last year)

Lexus has topped the list for years and Toyota has steadily been working its way up the list, but Porsche and Hyundai are two surprising results that I did not expect!

Someone please post a link when the list is released. Thanks!

Hmmm... that initial information came from Automotive News, but Forbes is reporting that Porsche came in first and Lexus came in second...

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2006/...ap2800115.html

Toyota Motor Corp. continued to dominate the initial quality rankings, grabbing the top spot in 11 out of 19 segments in the 2006 survey by J.D. Power and Associates, released Wednesday.

Porsche dominated the overall ranking of brands, averaging 91 problems per 100 vehicles. That compared with an industry average of 124 problems per 100 vehicles.

The study, in its 20th year, was revamped to isolate consumers' concerns about design flaws, as distinct from defects and malfunctions. The change in methodology makes year-to-year comparisons impossible.

However, a parallel survey conducted using the old methodology found that as a whole, the industry improved 8 percent from 2005, said Joe Ivers, executive director of quality and customer satisfaction research at J.D. Power.

Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, came in second in the overall nameplate rankings, with 93 problems per 100 vehicles. The Toyota brand came in fourth with 106.

"They're the closest thing to defect-free," Ivers said of the two brands.

In vehicle segments, Toyota had five winners, including the Corolla for compact car, the Camry for midsize car, and the Sequoia for large sport utility vehicle. Lexus had six top vehicles, including the IS 250 and IS 350 for entry premium car, the SC 430 for premium sporty car and LX 470 for large premium SUV.

Hyundai Motor Co. scored a sleeper hit with consumers, with the Hyundai brand coming in No. 3 with an average 102 problems. The Hyundai Tucson took the top spot for compact SUV or crossover.

For the study, J.D. Power collected responses from 63,607 purchasers and lessees of new 2006 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership.

This year's survey included 217 questions, up from 135 in previous years, and asked for information specifically about design problems, as well as defects.

BMW AG's BMW brand had few defects, but one of the highest number of complaints about design - specifically about the way the brand integrated new technology into its vehicles, Ivers said.

We're below the industrial avarage of 124 problems/ 100 vehicles at 140 problems/ 100 vehicles. But look at the bright side, we beat out BMW and Mazda

I hear a small rattle sometime from the rear of the car. It's nothing compared to the rattle from hell when I owned the 05 Accord and 02 Jetta. I guess Scion owners are really picky.

Keep in mind that JD Powers isn't exactly accurate. Rattles, blown up engines, and dead transmissions are all treated equal.

yeah it just measures the number of problems (pphv = problems per hundred vehicles) not the severity

has been discussed every year. consensus is that Scion owners are younger, used to more affluent vehicles, and are basically a bunch of whiners. last year the VP of scion read a list of "complaints" that he'd received, including "sunroof windnoise is unacceptable when traveling at 115mph..."

Keep in mind that this year's study is completely different than previous years in that it measures design defects as well as actual defects, meaning if the navigation system is too confusing, or the cupholder is in a weird place, it counts as a defect.

For example, the top 5 in Manufacturing Defects are as follows:

1 Lexus 42
2 Porsche 49
3 Toyota 52
4 BMW 52
5 Hyundai 53

Top 5 in Design Defects:

1 Porsche 35
2 Hyundai 41
3 GMC 43
4 Jaguar 44
5 Lexus 45

Top 5 overall:

1 Porsche 91
2 Lexus 93
3 Hyundai 102
4 Toyota 106
5 Jaguar 109

Scion was 26th in design and 27th in manufacturing for 27th overall.

"Consensus is that Scion owners are younger, used to more affluent vehicles, and are basically a bunch of whiners."

I don't really understand how the owners could be both younger and used to more affluent vehicles. In general, younger owners should NOT be used to more affluent vehicles because people tend to purchase more expensive vehicles as they become older and become more established in their careers.

I would believe that Scion has more first-time new car owners and first-time buyers may be pickier than others. If it is your first new car, you might expect it to be perfect.

Customer expectations definitely affect JD Powers Ratings. Unfortunately, that is one of the bad things about JD Powers Initial Quality Ratings. Higher quality items can sometimes receive lower scores than lower quality items because customer expectations are higher. However, it would be difficult to get information on initial quality in any other way. Also, how the issues are resolved affects the scores as well. If dealer service is excellent, customers will tend to forget about or not worry about issues.

I'm amazed Porche and Hyundai are so close to the top. I know Hyundai has improved alot, but I never would have expected them to be at the very top. It could be a case where Hyundai's quality is higher than expected and thus exceeded customers expectations, whereas Toyota and Honda buyers expected alot more. If Hyundai quality really is better than Toyota's, that's incredible.

Does anyone have any long-term information on Scion's reliability? The car has only been out for a few years, so we probably don't have any really good data on whether they will last. If a car starts to have issues in the first few years, then it is crap. A good car will have minimal issues in the 5 - 10 year range.

A big part of the JD Power Initial Quality survey this year is about design issues too. This is the first year that this was included. If someone didnt like where the mirror adjustment button was, then is was the same as if the car had a defect. Im sure ALOT of ppl called the centered speedo on the scion a bad design because its not what they are used to. so that becomes a defect. Personally I think this is stupid of JD Power to do on the INITIAL QUALITY test, as everyones opinion is different. Personally I like the center speedo, my wife hates it. If she took the survey it would be a defect even though its fine for me. In all, it makes companies and cars that have poor quality able to score higher because more ppl tend to like the layout of the dash or something stupid. It also makes companies with high quality that maybe dont do things with the norm score lower. And since this is a survey about quality it makes the better quality not as "design friendly" sound like it is going to fall apart at 80k miles and the one that will fall apart at 80k sound like its gonna go 300k.
