New xD media campaign aims for "little deviants"
I caught the end of that commercial last night for the first time.. then saw it AGAIN, about half of it, roughly 15 minutes after that.. it was really late, so must be one of those late night commercials they can't afford (somehow) to put on air during the day.. but I dunno.. if I wasn't already part of the Scion community, I think the commercial might freak me out a little bit... I just don't understand what those little things have to do with the xD (despite the faces).. or Scion for that matter.. oh well.. whatever Scion wants to do with their money and time.....
I saw the ad in a Corporate meeting a few weeks back. At first, I was like - what the hay was Scion thinking here?? I know that the clientel of Scion represents a market of people who are marked as different - but honestly, the driver of the xA/xD market would be the sheep people.
Most of my clientel are older people - so I'm not sure this ad would go over very well with them. But, if Scion wants to continue to move forward with this campaign, I vote that the dealers get little sheep heads for antenna ***** and maybe a Deviant stuffed animal for the showroom floor.

So, um, yea. SO I think the subliminal message is to not be a sheep. I saw a commercial during some movie trailers and at first I had no idea that it was a car commercial. I think its good marketing. Yea, I agree that there needs to be showroom marketing... t-shirt, stickers maybe.
yes stickers! little deviant stickers for my tc
and i think its awesome, no one wants to be a "sheeple" (unoriginal) so the deviants so something different and scions all about different and customization; which the commercials def. show. but if some random person; who knows nothing about scion; sees it they wont know what the hell it is and then go to the website to find out, its like curious George lol. like the "Now What Commercials" from state farm. i never knew what they were until i went to the website and explored. i got a quote all because of seeing the commercials over and over and not knowing what they were. (off topic but quoted too much lol)

Ya know, I just sat here for quite some time and played the game. Its so funny. Someone needs to make stickers... FOR SERIOUS! I loved it when I got to give the sheeple wedgies and fling them at buildings. ahhh all that green blood. hahhahaha

I never really cared much for this campaign. It seemed a tad bit forced. "Hey folks! Wanna know what's cool?! Take it from a major car company to tell you what's cool! Yeah! ROCK ON!!!"
Scion's been trying (buying) awfully hard to show everyone they've got some street cred. They've got to keep a couple key things in mind when developing these campaigns:
First: They're selling inexpensive cars with interesting body designs, NOT restored '64 Chevy Impalas. Real credibility is earned, not bought. If Scion has to spend over $30 million in ads telling everyone how cool and credible they are, chances are pretty good that they're not all that cool. Having to buy cool is for poseurs.
Second: I was told by Scion's reps that the "...Deviant campaign was meant to target a free thinking demographic that challenged conformity with an open mind." Most of the free thinkers I’ve met manage to keep an open mind without having to fantasize about committing violent crimes.
Lastly, "Sheeple" seem like the sort of people that would own (buy) a Camry, eh? It seems that Scion's "deviant" campaign is counter productive to Toyota's overall business plan, when they start belittling the owners of their number one selling product, no?
I was hoping to buy the tC later this year, but I ain't no deviant poseur. I'll just stick with my tricked-out emerald '71 Volvo p1800e for now.
Try, try again, Scion.

... I'm not trying to bash the xD or Scion ...
I just had a chance to witness the commercial for the xD prior to seeing the new Harry Potter movie. I had heard about the 'little deviants' commercial but never went hunting for a clip. I sat back and watched in total amazment.... at how stupid the commercial was. 90% of the commercial was the sheep and the deviants.... you hardly got to see the car.
The xA/xB/tC commercials were exactly what they needed in order to sell the cars effectively. That you, as a future Scion driver have a choice and can stand out from the crowd. The xD commercial said we can draw interesting little creatures and make it look like a cool commercial advertising who knows what.
Bring the xD into the original commercials!

Are you serious?
I honestly doubt you're going to find a Scion dealership in Plano or Richardson, or anywhere else that the "Little Deviants" marketing appeals to, because remember.....they're mostly staffed by people outside the target audience of "Little Deviants".
Scion's web persona gets a little deviant, and creepy

I love the new campaign! Finally Scion realizes not all gen x'ers are into the dance hip hop scene. I can't handle another event with the blarring dance re-mixes. emo kids, metal heads, punks, mods, and goths buy cars too market changes are needed to keep a brand fresh.
Love the little deviants but, I perfer marketing that has something to say. Ratherr than drum beats and a car going by.
Keep it dark scion

I know previously I posted up about how horrifying those little deviants were. Well, I went to www.littledeviants.info and played Chapters 1 & 2. Very fun I must say. Green blood, lamb/sheep noises. Puts a little fun in your hum drum day.
I just re read this post from the top and wanted to make a comment. In the ad, the sheep people are the quiet type. And the little deviants represent these crazied out people. Since my clientel is an older type, I was referring to the sheep people as a more relaxed older buyer. In no way was I calling them sheep. I just thought that Scion went a little overboard on putting a stereotype that strongly on the people who SHOULD be driving the car. Who knows? Maybe they are trying to go after a different market. Like, this is the new next generation for the xD/xA clientel, look out!!!! scare scare!!! I'm looking forward to the release and have already put 2 on order. One client was older - buying it for economy. The other was mid 20's - buying it for it's in-expensiveness - so he can trick it. I can't wait to play the rest of the game. I hope no one was offended by my sheep people comment. Good Selling to the scion consultants and Happy Driving to the clients, and soon to be clients. Have a good one.

OMG Because some people are goth and like the darker side it means were going to go out and shoot people and blow things up? Give me a break. I am a pink/ blue haired goth and I am not out to hurt anyone. I would just like to see Scion marketing to different types of gen x-ers. Not just hip hopers and ravers. They are attempting to market this car for the 20- 35 crowd. Not all people in this age range are into the same things which is what is so great about these cars, Make them your own. An extension of yourself. They would be stupid to only market to one particular crowd. If you don't care for the new ad campaign thats your deal. Surely others do. It's all in the matter of opinion and opinons are like well everryone is free to there own.
I must say I enjoyed your sterotyping there! The IQ you posses must be a real pain in the brain. From the few words you wrote you managed to sum up a whole society of people you do not know.
I am off to go eat the cat and devil worship, since I could not possibly be a decent person.

Frankly, I like the idea of an ad campaign that scares away people like papawhiskey......that's probably the only solution to scion's problem of "how do we keep our brand cool when clueless 65-year-olds keep buying them"
