Scion sales are down, brand image in flux
I honestly hope scion or toyota makes a car that can match or beat STI's and EVO's. I would buy toyota over subaru and mitsi any day. I also hope they make some other kind of coupe, they dont need anymore suv/box's. I dont mind the x's but they have enough cars with that shape. just putting in my two cents lol.

I think you have it all wrong. Youth, by their nature is more willing to take chances, be unique and stand out among their peers. As you get older, most loose a lot of that willingness to take chances, or stand out. I have a friend, my age, that really wanted a brand new "Red" truck. Sad to say, but he didn't get it. Was afraid of what people would think. It is a shame. But there are still a few of the older group that is willing to put it all out there. Like unique, and even thrive on it. My Dad said it rode like a buck-board (he was in the back seat). He still liked it much better than the PT. Of course the Gen 2 appeals to the older group much more. Looks basically like a lot of other mini-SUV's.
Has anyone noticed the Ford Flex, that from some angles looks a lot like the gen 1. Seats 7, huge engine. A bit like a Gen 1 after steroids for about 10-20 years. And it still blends nicely with everthing else that is out there.
Long live the gen 1's. If something happened to mine, I would replace it with another gen 1. I am happy with my unique ride and continue to work at making it more unique.
My unique is not really what the youth seem to be going for, but the key is it is still unique. I have the OEM Stereo (I need what hearing I have left), No Drop, I cringe when the body drags. 15" wheels, because I want the most comfortable ride possible. This is why I encourage all, no matter what age, to make the BOX "Uniquely theirs".
Signed: One of the crowd that the Gen 1 was not meant for, but I love it. MOD #41 just completed yesterday.

A kid down the street from be just went out and bought a black 2006 xB. Now there are 2 on the same block. The reason? The older ones get better MPG then the newer ones. Because Scion has lost it's "edge" is the reason I am looking into a 5Dr STi. I drive a VW Bug for work 5 days a week, and have recently seen a jump in xDs. The xB2 has gotten more popular and when asked why I did not purchase a tC I respond: "The tC was not out when I bought my xB and besides, everyone and their sister has a tC." No longer do I have a car that people stop me an ask "What is that thing? Can I sit in it?" Now it is just another car on the road.
Any auto review site/blog you visit, you will find articles questioning/criticizing Scion because it's young and has fluctuated the models a bit. Some stir up unspecific facts just to slap a story on the site because fear arousing communication will get yourself some attention.
Those who stay loyal will keep their car around 4-7 years. Some will trade-in or sell privately but currently most are still in for 2-3 more years. 2010/11 rolls around and maybe the charts will look different...and maybe not. With so much negativity in the news, it's getting old listening to all this garbage being speculated. With our economy in a so-called 'recession', I think Scion should get a little more credit instead of having the greater population keep questioning why this or why that.

they need to do with the first gen xb what vw of canada did with 4th gen jettas. reintroduce them as an xb "city" edition, with different taillamps. then they can still sell existing developed accessories and finally come out with the forced induction they teased us with. and oh double the gauge pod, make the center one a tach with your fuel gauge and the center one your speedo and idiot lights. i'd also love a 6th gear (which would also help highway economy even more) but that's a long shot. tweak the head and intake design to make it rev 500-600rpms higher as well add dual vvti if you're feeling crazy and actually want to spend R&D money.
these are all things i suggested when they were redesigning the xb, i stressed dont make it heavier, 800lb later with a 2.4L ecominy and tossability are hurt greatly and the power to weight ratio isnt much better.

This doesnt make any sense. They replaced two uniquely designed cars with unusual shapes, center dashes and compact design to more regular looking cars with driver side dashes and suddenly young peope no longer like them. Hummmmm.........
Nothing like seeing a blue hair drive an xa. Dont worry, next gen scion will look alost like the corolla and camry. Still dont get what uniqueness the tc brings to the line.

i just got a tc rs4.0 about two months ago, and i love it to death. i dont think i would trade it for any other car
D. i really like the scion scene. it's popular, it is fun and mildly easy to mod, and it fits the younger generation's style.
but it is true that scion is losing its edge. i think that it's cause they gave the old models a makeover rather than creating new ones. i guess it would be better if they had a wider selection. if i didnt see the rs4.0, i would have been less likely to get a tc, because they are everywhere.
perhaps another two door sporty? i would love to see scion come up with another one of those.

if they do another 2dr sporty car while keeping the tc, the 2nd one should be rwd. this way it won't compete as directly with the tc, it would compete more against the rx-8, while crushing it fuel economy wise. i'm thinking maybe a small lightweight mid-engined car similar to the old MR-2/MR-S models. only even shorter. think an xa sized/length mid engined hardtop roadster with a forced induction 1.5L and a closed ratio 6spd trans. it's use a lot of parts out of the company parts bin to be able to develop and manufacture cheap enough and would fill a market and product void, and def wouldnt appeal to old people.
if toyota wanted scion to have an suv, the fj cruiser should've been it, so they shouldn't have a scion suv as they would directly compete.
i think with the increases in size in the 2nd gen xb and the xd when compared with the xa that scion needs to reintroduce 2 new small cars again.

Yeah, the next tc needs to be rear engine like a fiero with a hugh trunk in the front like a pesudo lambo or so. Heck, why not make lambo door stock too?
VW I think was cooler inthe 70s and 80s with the sharped edge cars and truck. ANyone remember vw making a pick up truck? I wished I was able to restore and drive the dasher I had. It was diesel and rated at 49mpg. That was a 79 model too.

It's totally true, I see a ton of attractive, clueless women driving these cars
why do you think so many guys show up to scion meets and events with their fingers crossed (with their nails clipped and filed ;) )

one of the biggest problems ive seen is a lot of people that dont think before they talk and want everything for nothing. You want a bigger engine, more styling , more features, rwd, forced induction, and then when the vehicle gets bigger and the price goes up to account for these things people turn their backs on the cars they asked scion to build.
no rwd and forced induction dont require a car to be bigger, neither does a 6 spd.
look at the NB version of the mazdaspeed miata for an example. and the miata/mx-5 as a body of work as a whole on how a car can progress through the years without becoming a complete fat pig and still retain the driving feel of the original to a great degree.
as for price, yes those options and features will make them go up but they can be lessened by using parts from the existing corporate parts bin. also forced induction can be an additional add-on option that can be added later, like the supercharger on the tc.

"daring". softer on the eyes. same with the xd. build something that shocks us and young people will buy it.
I've owned nice cars
05 tsx w/ navi
06 civic si with comptech supercharger etc etc
and the only reason i picked up my 05 xB was for cheap/economical and honestly dont care to much about it.
However at 28yrs old, i think the new xB is definitely a nice car just for the $....nicer cars can be purchased.
The problem lies in Toyota/scions internal competitions
I recently took my gf to look at a Scion XD since her altima lease is up, because she needs something cheap on gas and cheap payments.
So i strolled over to the matrix and the salesman is like... other then looks that matrix is about 5k more then this and you'd have to package it up to get equivalent values
give or take etc
Now right there is what brought GM down... overlapping
Why would someone get a corrolla for 23k when they can get an xB thats BIGGER for their family for 6k less
We're in a recession, people need more bang for the buck.....not "the hottest car avail"
