Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. outsold Ford Motor Co. in July to rank as the No. 2 automaker in the U.S. for the first time, helping Asia-based companies win record market share as buyers shift to fuel-efficient models.

Toyota, which trails only General Motors Corp. in global sales, sold 241,826 vehicles in the U.S., up 12 percent from a year earlier, and 427 more than Ford. Gains of 6 percent for Honda Motor Co. and 6.2 percent for Hyundai Motor Co. helped the Asian companies boost their market share to 41.4 percent from 33.1 percent a year earlier, according to Bloomberg data.

``It's a different world. GM by itself used to have half the U.S. market,'' said Walter McManus, director of the University of Michigan's Office for the Study of Automotive Transportation. ``Sales are being driven by fuel costs, fuel efficiency, passenger cars. Toyota, and Honda to a lesser extent, added trucks but kept solid portfolios of cars.''

Toyota has benefited this year from demand for fuel- efficient cars such as the Corolla and Scion models and RAV4 small sport-utility vehicles as gasoline prices have stayed near $3 a gallon. As Toyota prepares to add capacity to build about 500,000 more cars and trucks in North America, GM and Ford are cutting a combined 60,000 U.S. union jobs and closing 26 locations to try and halt losses in the region.

It's only a matter of time before people realize who builds consistantly better cars with better mileage and better safety features. Watch out GM...You're next!

Hopefully Toyota doesn't turn into GM if (when?) they make it to the top. Don't get cocky, Toyota. I don't particularly like Toyotas, but I still don't want to see them turn into GM.

Toyota will NOT get cocky. The mindset, especially at the top, is one of controlled panic. They are constantly nervous, as if they are on the verge of failure, which keeps them constantly evolving and thinking. Toyota changes management often to keep fresh ideas and skill sets in the mix, too.

It's good to be the 400lb gorilla.

Toyota's attitude as stated in serveral interviews is the Korean manufacturers right now and Chinese manufacturers in the future might be able to nip away at their share of the entry level buyer. So while they press forward into new segments like full sized trucks, they have to watch their back on compacts.

Yeah, if the Korean cars don't fall apart.

The Koreans have made great strides in manufacturing quality, especially in intitial quality, but I with Zebman - let's look at an Hyundai or a Kia in 5 years and see if the thing is still screwed together. Hell, some of the domestics can make a decent car OFF THE LINE, but they are rattletraps in 3 months.

And I don't think that Toyota (or anyone for that matter) will have to worry about the Chinese for quite some time. They're quailty, from what I understand, is a special kind of atrocious. And they're "design-by-government-committee" looks are not winning many advocates either.

I understand about the long term quality and the lack of original design but there are plenty of entry level buyers for whom this isn't their main goal, they just want something that looks decent and fits their budget.

I got a Pontiac LeMans as a first car from a relative on the cheap, I never loved the car, and the engine started going south before 100,000mi, but it got me to and from work and school.

Good point. But I think that anyone with money to spend is going to be concerned about getting the MOST for their money. There will ALWAYS be the buyer that just needs something CHEAP. Not your typical Toyota/Scion buyer, IMO.

Oh, I think Toyota would like to sell cars to those buyers too. If it fits the budget and is a quality product, who would turn it down? For some folks budget has to be #1.

my tC started to sound like it was falling apart on the slightest bumps after 6 months.
so far i'm not satisfied with the build quality, but maybe i will be in many years?

its been promised by many people that toyotas build quality is excellent but i drove my girl freinds 96 civic (60,000 miles) and it creaked alot less than my new tC and there were no rattles.

so far i'm just not seeing the toyota quality

sorry to complain so much but it bothers me and complaining on a forum helps a little.
