Default Toyota Tops Ford for No.2 Spot in U.S. Auto Sales

Full story here:

...
Toyota sold 48,226 more cars and trucks than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota's sales were up 3% for the year, buoyed by new products like the Toyota Tundra pickup, which saw sales jump 57%.

Ford's sales fell 12%, ending with a whimper a year that is expected to be the worst for the auto industry since 1998 as consumers fretted over high gas prices and the economy.

Ford corporate historian Bob Kreipke said it was the first time since 1931 that Ford wasn't second behind General Motors Corp.

If you count Scion into the Toyota numbers, they would overtake GM as #1.

Interesting how GM can count Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Saturn, Cadillac, etc......but Toyota can't count Scion, eventhough they are not sold stand alone on seperate lots.

I could be wrong, but I believe the debate was Toyota vs Chevrolet and Toyota outselling the Chevrotlet brand with the inclusion of Scion. Chevrolet used to count Geo as a Chevy...was Toyota's response.

Article:
Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s namesake division may declare itself the No. 1 auto brand in the U.S. for 2007. General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet won't agree.

The dispute pivots on one question: How should sales of Toyota's Scion cars be tallied?

At stake are bragging rights that go with the top-selling line of autos in the U.S. Toyota's count includes Scion, cars that bear no Toyota badges and are marketed separately. By that measure, the Japanese automaker's lead through November sets the stage for a full-year win. Leave Scion out, and Chevy will likely retake the title when results are released tomorrow.

I had to drive one of those when my tC was in the shop, I would rather have my tC with all the squeaks and rattles than the average rental car.
