Default 07 wind deflector

recently mine shattered, and after being told it would most likely be covered by the warranty, i was given instead an estimate of 425 dollars to fix (350 part, 50 labor, 25 tax). i already emailed and called scion and was told that it's not going to be covered, and they told me my last option was to take it to another dealer or see the customer service specialist at the current dealership. has anyone gotten a 07 wind deflector replaced under warranty? and, is there any other options that i could pursue? and, is there any company that makes a non-glass deflector, as i don't want to risk it shattering again.

ps, scion didn't seem to care that the glass still breaks off, or that some of it landed on me.

With the dealer you need to fight for what you deserve, go to a higher authority figure at the dealer, if that doesn't help contact Toyota and tell them about it, unforuntatly getting what you rightfully deserve isn't easy. I wouldn't let up on this.

Would you get your hood repainted under warranty if you get rock chips in it?

No, I don't think so.

So why would you "rightfully deserve" for this to be replaced under warranty?

This isn't as common as everyone thinks it is. We have an all glass roof... some are going to break. It sucks, yes. It also sucks that some fell on you. But until there's a real problem with it, Scion is pretty much hands off as long as they all have their laminate applied (which everything from 06 on does).

If you're really worried about it, talk to Rockblocker about getting a laminate for the outside too for a little extra protection.

so, my problem was a "fake problem"? not a "real problem"?

i've read on here that many broken deflectors from the 05's and 06's had been replaced under warranty, and i don't see why my 07 wouldn't, since they didn't change anything about the glass itself.

my main goal was to see if any 07 owners had had theirs replaced under warranty, that's it.

i do think that the wind deflector is an easy target for impact, and is very ill-equiped to take a hit, but that's my own fault for not recognizing that before purchasing.

i certainly will be getting the rockblaster film for just the deflector, only 10 bucks it seems, as the wind deflector is the only piece of glass up there that is in danger of taking a direct hit.

doesn't anyone think 350 for that piece of glass is a bit outrageous? the windshield for my old car didn't even cost 200.

Yes, they did change something about the glass. It's not that they're (the 07s or later models) more or less prone to breaking - they're all the same... the concern was glass breaking off and falling in the car (which you mentioned happened). In order to TRY to prevent that (it's not perfect), Scion decided to have a laminate applied to the back of the glass starting with the 06s on. The 05s and early 06s had a "recall" of sorts to have that laminate applied later. The laminate was meant to keep most of the glass in one big clump stuck to that laminate, instead of getting 6 billion tiny pieces flying all around. Not necessarily to keep it from shattering or anything - but there is a difference.

I think it's so expensive b/c you can't replace JUST the glass. I believe it's sort of glued or secured to it's mounting brackets so that you can't really just remove the glass and put a new piece in - it's a bit more complicated.

I'd suggest looking into an insurance claim to replace it - but that would depend on what your deductible is. A lot of people have a $500 deductible, so of course it would be kind of dumb to pay $500 to replace something for $450.

i believe that you should at least give it a try. scion may pay for it or they may not but it certainly isnt going to cost you anything to try. good luck!!!

x2 on everything ack just said. The recall was for the none laminated windows breaking into billions of pieces...now it will break like a windshield does...it'll stick together for the most part, but I just realized how much of a PITA it would be to clean up the glass if it were to get in our car. Talk about a headache and something that you will never get rid of, especially if it gets in the fabric of our seats

hmmmm... first off. How did you break your deflector? If you tell them that you're driving on a road condition that a car not suppose to be driven on, namely up a rocky road or something, then they'll fight you. But if you tell them that its shatter was caused by a rock in the highway or something, then you'll get good shot. Go talk to the manager and kept escalating. Write a letter to the corporate office or something. Don't let it go.

the warranty covers factory errors on the vehicle made by the manufacturers. the wind deflector was fine until something hit it and broke it, that is not toyota/scions fault, glass breaks when hit, thats just the way it is.

thanks for all the input. i was always sure to close the moonroof on the highway, and i'm not even sure what actually broke it to tell you the truth, but it was most likely from an impact at around 40 mph, or lower. the broken deflector did mostly stick together, but there is a good deal of pieces in the well under the deflector, and some are somewhere along I70, and the few that made it into the cabin are already trash.

as far as the insurance route, i have a 250 deductible, but i'm going to see if the 200 dollars i'd save would be offset by rate increase before i go that route. can you tell i've never had a claim before? ten years of driving now.

i'm going to meet with the customer service rep at the dealership sometime next week as a last resort, but i don't see that going my way.

so, still no other 07 or 08 owners who had broken deflectors out there?

He probally rightfuly deserves it replaced because it isnt normal for glass to come down on the driver at such low speeds? Most people don;t settle for that.

just for the record: the impact, and the glass in the interior, happened at around 40 mph, off the highway; the glass flying off the car happened on the highway, after it happened - i had to get home, you know? no new pieces seem to be leaving the well under the deflector or coming off the deflector itself. i'll probably drive around with it like that for a while longer, just for kicks.
